Double Eyelid Surgery is the most popular cosmetic procedure in Japan because it promises a more "western" looking eye. But for some young girls who don't wanna go under the knife, these stickers provide an easy alternative. These stickers are advertised as being "great for Halloween" but are they just another tool used by many girls to reject their ethnicity?

wow, thats really sad, a little better than surgery but its still upsetting that people reject themselves and their ethnicity.

How is that any better than going under the knife?
-
because if a person who is not thinking things through goes under the knife it is permanent at least here there is the temporary factor that allows one to see what their doing is foolish.

In response to this, I know a friend of mine who uses these stickers. It is NOT because she is rejecting her race or ethnicity, but it is because of the myriad of comments often made to her. She's told that she looks tired even though she is not, or because her eyes are slanted, she looks angry even though she's not, etc, etc.
It's not all about trying to become more American, but it's also about physical beauty, and having more self-confidence. If we criticize this procedure, then we might as well give the same criticism to westerners who undergo plastic surgery to look a way they want to. -
True, personally I think altering yourself due to the comments of others or the opinions of others, is just changing for someone other than yourself. I do not condone any self-slavery be it by stickers or plastic surgery if you are not accepting of your own skin it is a shame, no matter what culture or region you are from.
Do not take it as a hostility but using these stickers does not foster self confidence, if just creates confidence that a sticker will protect you from your own or others criticism.-

i am not criticizing the use of these stickers because of the person insecurity. i am criticizing the fact that in most of society a certain type of look is preferred. i am criticizing a world which makes a person insecure about something as natural as the shape of their eyes.
i see this sort of self hatred within many cultures. Personally i have seen it within the Hispanic communities. a lot of Hispanics women find themselves hating their curves, their curls, and most commonly (at least from my expiriances) their nose.-

Asewgo,
How would you feel if people tell you that you look tired all the time? How about people not appraoching you because your eyes make you look upset/angry even though you are not? By criticisms, this is what I mean, and not because your eyes look a certain way.
With all due respect to your opinions, I am sure that most people who use these would have the upmost pride of their culture. -
These double eyelid stickers can be likened to makeup. would ANYONE here bash someone for wearing makeup? I don't think so.
I personally think that Asian eyes and eyelids are beautiful. I also like the "double" eyelid that I have. This double eyelid surgery has been popular for a long time, and its not going anywhere. The stickers are as much of a way to see what you would look like if you had the surgery just as makeup shows us what we would look like if we had permanent eyeliner tattooed on our eyelids. -
ugh it's so frustrating when people think asians want double eyelids because they want to look "westernized". they want their eyes to appear rounder or bigger and those stickers are just another form of makeup. what about those who use lip plumpers? you wouldn't say they want to look black. or for those who get fake tans or use bronzers, would you say they are trying to look latino? please do some research before posting ignorant stuff like this.

response 1: I wouldn't care if someone told me i looked tired, angry/upset; seeing as i get that all the time and it has yet to phase me, i tell them that i am not and go on my merry way. sure people react their own ways, but changing who you are (to appease others views no less) is just a sad practice i think people should ween theme selves off of.
response 2: I do bash the use make-up on the average person because it, like the stickers, is something done to be "aesthetically pleasing" and avoid how you really look. you cannot argue this, it IS falsifying ones self because you feel the need to change yourself, weather for your own wants or worse yet, the wants and expectations of others.
response 3: SOME people ARE getting these to look westernized, so it is frustrating when someone ignorantly ignores the truth of the matter and assumes others are as generalizing of groups as themselves. also, some would say those things about those other cosmetic cover ups because some people DO it for those reasons. so please THINK before posting and again, generalizing. also im not as mad about people trying to be like another culture, just that people cannot accept themselves and readily change themselves, which really is a product of this pathetically non committal world we live in.
anyway one point i would ask is do your relatives think that you are in essence calling them ugly? you know seeing as how if you use these (or makeup etc) you obviously cannot take the "pain" or "inconvenience" of looking how you are and need to change it.
honestly this really is like buying a painting just so you can paint over it.-

Look. i'm asian
i have single eyelids and i use double eyelid glue and stickers/tape because i love makeup and it's harder to do things with your eyes with single eyelids. if i had alot of money i would do the surgery, i mean it's just as common as getting braces in taiwan and japan etc nowadays. it annoys me when people say it's because we want the 'western look' how is it the western look when so many asians have double eyelids too? With the surgery tapes or whatever, What difference does it make from a westerns wanting a tan? or people dying there hair. it's the same thing.
it's all depends on the indivuals, most of you probable have doublelids so you wouldn't know how it feels to be someone who doesn't have them. But everyone has something they don't like about them. Mine just happens to be my eyes as i love makeup.
but i guess your all intitled to your opinians as i am.
