Artists understand imagery symbols and information, therefore the role of the art activist can be to take information and reformat it for a larger audience.
Since the mid-90's, some groups believe that the CIA has operated a programme called extraordinary rendition in which suspected terrorists captured in Western nations are transported to secret locations for torture and interrogation . The extraordinary rendition programme is allegedly largely carried out using leased equipment and private contractors. The Institute for Applied Autonomy, an anonymous collective of artists designers, activists and engineers, have created an imagined CIA travel agency specialising in extraordinary rendition flights, based on the information collected by plane spotters and journalists of actual specific flights of specific people who have been rendered.
The group's stated mission is to develop technologies that extend the autonomy of human activists in public acts of expression. The two week time frame of social conscious and memory is sometimes not enough when the issues are this serious. The installation was part of the Social hacking event in Plymouth.

great piece of information.

Interesting! One of the parts of my project has to do with informing and teaching pilots to be out of San Francisco's neighborhoods acoustic airspace. I have tons of footage of very "haired" events from pilots and air traffic controller's that does not exactly translated into respect for our communities. Well, some say that "the function of a teacher is to act like a parrot repeating things in circles until someone eventually gets it!" Therefore I'll keep trying over and over again until these guys living constantly in the skies gets it!

Many thanks to Julie for making/posting this video, however, for reasons that are not clear to us Current.tv decided to censor the tail numbers of all the planes. These have all been previously published in major newspapers, and were carefully researched before we included them in the project.
The list of planes that *should* appear in this video are:
N313P
N379P
N829MG
N85VM
84-0112
Wikipedia has detailed entries on each of these planes. If you want to see the original, uncensored version you'll find it at: http://current.com/items/76795892_terminal_air

We're extremely proud of this pod and very happy to have it showing on the channel. Particularly at a time when this subject is in the headlines again.
Just to reassure Julie and all the talented people at Applied Autonomy, we'll be revising the pod to un-blur the plane tail numbers. This was our error and was the result of an internal miscommunication. We're just making the changes now and will update the online version once we're done.
Do contact me through my profile if you have any other concerns and do keep current up to date with your projects! You can create an Applied Autonomy topic page on the site which you can keep adding to with all your news if you like.
