Illustration of poverty in America. And really, that 19,000 figure is erroneous because at the current rate of inflation and the devaluation of the dollar, if you make 19000 a year only you are not getting that, so the poverty line is actually higher than that. Food, gas, electric, rent, and add to that high interest credit card payments with unnecessary fees because that is the only way some can make it if they need anything in an emergency, and you have a population of Americans living on the edge. So what is this government that always has money to bail out corporations really going to do to address this? Do they really care about the millions of children who go to sleep every night in shelters who are hungry and wondering what tomorrow will bring? Those of us barely hanging on? The richest country in the world? I think not.

That is why I'm a Liberal Democrat. I hate that there are children that are hungry.

Now that Edwards is out of the race, it's worrying to think about poverty disappearing from the national conversation. I’m fascinated to see to what degree Obama and Clinton will step into Edwards’ poverty shoes--either to get his endorsement or to claim the issue from the other. In fact, I write about Obama, Clinton, and poverty in my post today on The Weekly Rader:

Don't look for much from Clinton, her husband reformed welfare almost out of existence. No matter that there are truly people that are unable to take care of themselves, and children end up in homeless shelters. Republican to the core.
