Delta/Northwest merger could mean higher fares

Rumors that the two airlines may merge have been circulating for weeks, and reports show they may now be close to a deal. The merge would create the largest US air carrier and should result in fewer delays (yay! Not sure how or why...but yay nevertheless!), and potentially higher fares, particularly for small to mid-size markets (boo!!!). Fortunately, Southwest and Jet Blue also service several of the smaller markets, and may therefore be able to keep prices from rising too high.

    This could really hurt small markets, like Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where very little competition already exists.
