Violence is expected to escalate today, as Turkish troops continue their offensive into northern Iraq in pursuit of separatist Kurdish militants who have launched attacks on southern Turkey. The invasion comes after many weeks of tension in the area. Five Turkish troops and around 44 rebels have been killed in Iraq since the campaign began late on Thursday. The Iraqi government has pressed Turkey to respect the sovereignty of the state.
The Kurdish militants are fighting for autonomy in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish south-east; the conflict has been dragging on since 1984 and has claimed an estimated 40,000 lives altogether.
With a resurgence of violence in Afghanistan and Iraq still locked in a cycle of violence what does this mean for the stability of the region?

I don't think it matters who is "president", we have already taken this too far. Now that Turkey has invaded Iraq is it even possible to think now that we will be drawing down troops? Will we ever get the REAL TRUTH about what is going on there from ANY of them? And of course, Bush and his cabal have at least ten more months to continue to do whatever the hell they want to make sure we can't get out. And if I remember right, I believe I read that Bush agreed to give Turkey nuclear secrets... Is this what they get in return? Ratcheting up this war to keep it going? I would say then for none of the candidates to even stand up for impeaching these bastards should be enough to disqualify them from running for the presidency. This war is FAR from over. The Kurdish rebels are backed by the U.S. govt.... again then, this is far from over. Such a shame people didn't want to listen to the voices of reason whey had the chance.

The Kurds should have a country of their own. This would take considerable land from Iraq, Iran and Turkey so it will never happen. Damn the imperial powers who divided up the middle east on whims.
Remember that whether or not if someone is a rebel or a patriot is a matter of perspective. (Remember how the US was formed.) Not too many Kurds would call the PKK a rebel group.
Why does the US support Kosovo but not the PKK?-
