Barack Obama's Ties To Nuclear Power

I'm surprised any network even dared to touch this. But it does prove to me that Barack Obama is no more anti-lobbyist than Hillary Clinton is. However, more importantly, I am not convinced that he would not use nukes in a military strike. Even at the debates, he has made it clear that he would not hesitate to attack Pakistan (and like Bush has stated that terrorists are planning to hit us again) and just to remind you, Pakistan has nukes. For me it is hard to look credible for you to say you are against nuclear proliferation yet for nuclear power. And as this wound up, the bill he stated he passed was watered down and never became law. Is this then really change or just more of the same wrapped in a different package? And this issue is important to me and one I think should be important to more people. Nuclear power is not the "clean green" energy source everyone has been led to believe it is, and Obama's ties to lobbyists along with Clinton regarding this make me very wary of just how much they will be for truly eliminating nukes while allowing subsidies for gigantic nuclear power plants to be built. And one other thing, how would the residents of any town know that any "voluntary" policing was working? In the beginning of this Obama stated that the bill regarded notification of what the power plant "believed to be radioactive." That is just an open invitation for them to lie about what they are still emitting and simply saying it isn't radioactive enough to warrant notification. Why are they allowed to leak at all? So as long as they "notify" residents they don't have any other accountability? Again, like the Bush administration we get "voluntary" policing of a potentially deadly hazard to humans, marine life, air, and water. And frankly, that isn't good enough for me.

  • Good point, and with his lack of experience in foreign affairs, and huge ego.....I am sure that he will expect the leaders of other countries to bow to him....I actually haven't heard one straight answer to any question he has been asked. I , for one, am tired of hearing him use John F Kennedy's words , and his comparison of himself to such a great man......I might add......I am an Illinoisian and this state is in shambles.

  • Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Nuclear power can be stopped. So can coal fired power. That depends on us. Obama is going to be President. Adjust and start working toward what you want, join forces and work against that you don't like and for that you want. He is a damn sight better than the others that are in the mix. The first thing we need do is push hard for public financing of all campaigns. We get what we pay for, so do the corporations that finance these campaigns. It's our fault.
  • If the nuclear industry could be stopped then candidates like John Edwards would not be pushed out because they say they are against nuclear power. If representatives like Obama, Clinton, and others would STOP taking donations from companies like Exelon, ADM, EXXON, and other companies that promote environmental degradation that would be the start. Does Obama also know of the secret CDC report just released that showed pollution in the rivers around Illinois that produced cancer in children? I'm sick of the rah rahs and excuses on every site on the Internet regarding all of these candidates. When are the hard questions going to be answered? When are candidates regardless of who they are going to be held accountable? He is allowing voluntary policing of nuclear leaks. You don't find that unacceptable? Tell me how we are going to just get rid of nuclear and coal with the huge sudsidies they get from the very Congress he sits in without a revolution? And I don't know that he is a damned sight better than the rest, which is why I am bringing these points up. Unless you are sure that the people enmasse are willing to stand up to get rid of nuclear and coal, don't try to make me believe it can be done. No one is standing up now to stop it, least of all Barack Obama. If he gets up at a rally and publicly states that he is against nuclear and will no longer take ANY money from nuclear lobbyists or coal lobbyists, is against Archer Daniels Midland regarding the huge profits they make from corn ethanol while being one of the least environmentally responsible companies globally and says it like he MEANS IT and then has the actions to back it up, then we're getting somewhere. Otherwise, I will continue to have my doubts. If he is the candidate of change he needs to do much more to prove it besides giving speeches.

  • He can't stop them alone. They take money from those companies because they have to. John Edwards made that glaringly apparent. The only way we are ever going to win is with public campaign financing. It is stupid of us to expect them to represent us when they depend on corporations for their very political life. We can't have it all. It's up to you and I to rally the people to demand no new coal or nuclear power plants. I don't like Obama's health care plan, I hate Hillary's, and John Edwards plans. I intend to work as hard as I'm able to get the improved, expanded Medicare to include everyone. I believe that is the only true universal health care plan. I just believe that Obama is not so firmly entrenched in Washington that he can't fix things. We desperately need fresh people. I'm sick to death of the Bush, Clinton crowd.
  • Oh yes, he certainly is qualified to be president of this country based on what you have to be and do to get there. No disputing that. And I did mention Clinton here as well, but since Obama is the one trying to portray himself as different from her, I find it a bit hypocritical to see that in many ways he isn't.

  • Jan, I really do understand your rage and hatred. I hated everyone when Edwards got out. I still believe he was the best. If we had campaign financing and a free press he would have been our President. It's not going to be so I'm going to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Clinton is not going to be the candidate. I'm not sorry. I think we would just have more of the same. She lost me on war funding and trying to look tough. Obama is going to be the candidate. Go to his web site and see what he is about. We need to start writing letters to work toward policy changes on things we don't agree with. I agree that he isn't perfect. He is what we got.
  • I am total agreement about your feelings of Barack Obama......the only cause he is fighting desperately for is his own. People need to read the voting records, read of the house he lives in worth 30 over million....and he gained all this on a one term Senator's salary?

He himself says he is starting a movement....but to where?

As a licensed insurance agent for over 25 yrs in Illinois, statistics have shown Cancer as the highest death rate in the state. I think it is time to invest in solar and wind power....

  • Marilyn, where do you see hate here? I LOVE this planet, and I have not only criticized Barack Obama on his stance regarding nuclear, but Clinton as well as ALL the Republicans, especially Cheney who actually shares the same views as Obama and Clinton on this. I am then sorry if you see a valid concern as hatred. Also, he may be what we get but that does not mean he will get a free ride on issues with me just because he is a Democrat. And in all honesty, if you think you know someone just based on a website, that only perpetuates what this country is going through today. I don't hate anyone ( well, perhaps with the exception of Bush) but I'm also not a lockstepper. And you can be assured that should he get to the Wh he will hear from me on this issue as the others will hear. I will not have my child growing up in a nuclear world.

  • Jan, I'm not picking on you. But, you are obviously angry. I'm sorry if I offended you. I know how angry I was when Edwards withdrew. I had put my whole heart into his candidacy. It was almost like someone died. Then we were left with the two that the media chose. I cried and after I decided to choose the one that could win and that can I think be swayed on his bad policy's. Gore is in the fight against nuclear and has the worlds ear. I don't believe there will be anymore nuclear power plants. That would be political suicide. Obama is not stupid.

  • dont have time to get into the whole nuclear convo rite now....but glancing over your synopsis above, I have to call B.S.

Jan...my experience of you..(or at least your online presence) is usually pretty angry too. Not that there's anything wrong with that :)

"But it does prove to me that Barack Obama is no more anti-lobbyist than Hillary Clinton is."

please don't allow youtube-based media to "prove" anything legitimate...or influence your conscience/better judgement.

marilyn's mention of rage and hatred was a bit much..tho

no comment on either of your' hatin' (vernacular/jive talk)

(geez, you ladies get so worked up over this stuff lulz)

  • smorrisey, We get worked up because it matters to us,
  • I agree with what Marilynn says. The political system, sucky as it is, is what we have.

The thing about Obama is, he's sweeping the nation with popular support. This means that the People, for once, are putting the president they want into office. He represents the people's will.

NOW, we have to speak up about what we the People want - oil companies, nuclear interests, lobbying money be damned.

When Obama is sworn in, it will be time for action, and we have to make known what kind of action we want him to take.

IF we're lucky, we have one more chance to do this right. We cant make the wrong choices when it comes to energy and our planet or we're FUCKED.

  • smorrisey: So I suppose you then won't be posting anything from you tube here again? And sure, you can't get into it because you probably don't know enough to get into it? I have been reading up on this for quite some time, and I know the dangers of nuclear power and what it does to give cancer to humans, to toxify our land and water, to kill marine life, and to put us into a precarious position in a time and place where nuclear power is not a good option. And that is more a righteous indignation and passion of mine than it is anger, although I don't understand why people in this country are castigated about being angry about things that MATTER. Of course, I could be angry that my pick on American Idol didn't make it...or angry that Dancing With The Stars didn't pick a celebrity i wanted on it... or angry because the dress someone wore to the Oscars was somthing I didn't like. However, I prefer to reserve my anger for things that do matter to this world and to my child's future. I have read about people who have contracted cancer living near nuclear power plants, and after losing my parents to cancer you bet it makes me angry. I know about the leaks that are hidden ( look up Indian Point,) and the lax security and lack of qualfifications of employees that puts this country in danger. I know the cost of building them and the amount of Co2 expended to do so from the mining of uranium to the running of them that is not green. I know the amounts of water they waste which in a time of drought is not feasible... and so yes, it ANGERS me that people in Congress STILL prefer to look to their own political aspirations and campaign coffers in continuing to subsidize this form of antiquated, expensive, dangerous energy in lieu of alternate measures that we need now, not ten years from now. Barack Obama is taking money from a company that perpetuates the status quo. To me that is not "change" it is business as usual, and I will call him, Clinton, McCain, and anyone else in Congress out on that. Perhaps one day when you are older you will understand why people get upset over matters such as this. Nuclear kills as does coal, and we have to stand up to end them or our planet will reach a tipping point we will not be able to recover from. So please excuse me for giving a damn. And no need for the sexism... I am not "worked up" because I am a woman, I am worked up because I am an environmentalist. You would do well perhaps to get worked up yourself, because that is what will eventually make change and I don't intend to ever apologize for the way I feel about this.

  • Stephen: he hasn't got it yet, and that too is something we need to get worked up about, though I don't see Americans on the whole really getting worked up over election fraud either. If you remember the election of 2000, it is already a given that even though someone may get popular support it doesn't mean they will make it to the Wh. And what is that popular support based on now? A true caring for issues like this? Or just people going along with the crowd, or listening to what a celebrity and the media tells them? Oh well, I suppose that is another topic for another discussion...But since it appears people are castigated for daring to bring up subjects that question Barack Obama, I can also now understand why so many people stay out of the fray and stay silent. I too like to win, but I like to win for the right reasons.

  • Rage, Thank you for doing the research. It gives me reason to hope. I'm very afraid of nuclear power plants. I'd like to see every one of them dismantled. I want solar, wind whatever is safe and clean. It's going to be an uphill battle and it has to be fought. I'm glad to know Obama is on the right side.

And will any of them stand up to the Bush administration on this? They still have ten months to wreck this country and this world even more than they already have. Not standing up against this now doesn't exactly fill me with hope for what they will do in the future.
    JanforGore
  • Sorry, but on issues of human life you don't relent. Is voluntary policing better than nothing? Who knows? In many ways it is the same. If he relents in the Senate will he do it from the Wh as well? Will he cave to corporate pressure and to the Republicans he claims he wants unity with who will continue toi lobby this? I sure hope not.
    JanforGore
  • Please don't patronize me. This isn't about "not liking someone." I am not sophmoric. Is that the reason why people here trash Clinton or anyone else then? I don't like THE POLICY, and I especially don't like being made to feel like the wool is being pulled over my eyes again by those saying they don't take lobbyist money when they do. I also want answers to something that is important to me knowing how the influence of corporate interests can change things. As you can see I also posted a link here asking if ANY OF THEM will speak out against the Bush administration regarding their nuclear weapons plans, and also posted elsewhere about the LCV zero rating of McCain. Their policies on nuclear are basically the same. Their policies on climate change are practically the same. Therefore, I have no reason to trust one will be any different or better on this policy than the other, and that is disappointing. And yes, they will have important issues to address.... one being the very climate crisis we face exacerbated by the very interests they ALL cater to. But if this site is going to turn into a place where you are only allowed to cheerlead for the "winner" with people jumping on those who dare to ask questions of them, then I don't think that is in line with the vision of this station.

  • Jan, the key phrase is Jr Senator. Seldom in this Senate or Congress do they get a chance to change anything. I would love to get someone in the White House that can slay dragons. In reality we take the best we can get and then we try to get them to work for what we want. Obama is going to be our next President we would do well to try to change his mind about a few things. He won't be the last word on Health Care, the environment or anything. We have a Senate and House of Representatives. Lobby them.

  • Hey, 96thdayofrage: It is obvious you have been bitten by Obamamania and you didn't like Obama being exposed for being no different than all the rest even though he claims he is. Bummer for you. That's OK though, because at least you admit they are all the same. Which is actually making my choices for November very easy: To either hold my nose and be forced to cast a ballot for another media hyped phony hypocrite or not vote at all. And the latter choice is actually looking more and more a possibility with every day that goes by.

  • Nope, not supporting any of the corporate media creations that got shoved down our throats again because we allowed the good ones to be pushed out. And it is people who just accept that who perpetuate it happening every four years. They whine and complain about this media and this system and then just move on to rah rah for the next one shoved in their faces like they want you to. Well, I'm tired of being forced to vote for someone I didn't support or to vote against someone instead of for someone. However, I doubt if I don't vote in November that I would be missed considering it may not count anyway because it sure didn't the last two times, and all of the millions of people who are going to wake up that day and have that sudden "epiphany" Obama told them they would have to walk to the polls mumbling 'must vote for Obama, must vote for Obama' will surely pick up the slack. And that is really one of the facets of this American Idol campaign that is turning me off. The cultlike features of some his supporters and the absolute rabidness with which people who criticize him in any way are treated hearken back to the same way people who criticized Bush were treated. So no thank you, I will not give credence to that, nor the DLC agenda of the Clintons that is in my mind also the real agenda of Obama, only he is doing a good job of hiding it. ( Reports he has an advisor who favors privitizing SS, his recent remarks about charter schools and actually stating if research ( which has already been done and proven vouchers don't work) proves right that he would even consider a voucher system that is in code word a way to privitize the public school system which is a Republican effort. His love of nuclear, his wish to augment the military budget ( why would you do that if you are anti-war?), his talk about Pakistan, his line in a debate that stated that terrorists are planning on hitting us again ( which is what Bush said just a couple weeks ago), his reticence to pledge that he will not send any troops he may take out of Iraq to another country, and that on top of his healtcare plan and his plan on climate change that like Clinton's and the rest only seek to serve corporations instead of stating bold evasive plans to address this crisis now... all of these things weigh on me, and I refuse to vote for anyone who is not straught up publically, so I guess that basically applies to the lot of them. And all I just typed can be found if you do a little work of your own. Besides, I already voted in my primary for John Edwards so my work is done, unless of course, something changes my mind. I just hope that the rest of the country in November actually has their votes counted, since all of the people in this country who are so distracted with BS won't even see it being stolen from under their feet again because when it comes to really being citizens, this country fails miserably.
