Lindsay Lohan recently posed as Marilyn Monroe in a remake of "The Last Sitting." One interesting thing about the photo spread is the age difference; when Monroe posed for the original she was 36, Lohan is only 21. Is this evidence that older women are considered unattractive in our society?

  • Jessica Lange recently wrapped production on a film with two other older women in starring roles. She said, in a tv interview, that women of her age are having a harder time now in finding those roles than ever before. Why is this? Is the. so called, "Disney Darlings" influence that prominent in Media? It would appear to be so. Oddly enough, those same younger women of the "Mouse Factory" are some of the most screwed up in modern history. And We, the people, can't get enough of their tragic antics. What a strange new world. An industry tells us who to worship and we blindly follow without thinking about who it is we're really worshiping. Will Hanah Monatana become the next nutcase? She'll have to get in line behind Britney's little sister. Jessica was right. Our way of looking at this stuff is way out of focus. "The Last Sitting" was Marilyn's final shoot that ended up in Playboy. She looked drugged and rundown. Not a good legacy. Lohan is, apparently, too messed up to have figured that out. On the other hand, I still think that Helen Mirren is a babe. Go, older women!

  • I think society judges attractive people by how attractive they are, not by their age. Some of the best looking actresses out there didn't get really, really good looking until they got older.

I think this is a non-existent issue, to be honest. Anything that uses the word "society" instead of "some people" are really trying to blow things out of proportion. Yes, some people like younger actresses. Why? Because they're attracted to them. That's it. End of story.

For the record, I'd take Molly Ringwald over Lohan any day.

  • I think we're currently transitioning away from a society with a fetish for "younger looking women" and towards a healthier more mature looking woman. This is evident in the advertisement industries for one, which are now featuring human shaped models in advertisements rather than stick figures that used to be in there place (though admittedly this is a slow shift). But one cannot deny an unhealthy obsession in America for women looking as young as possible and it is a curious quirk that for so many years "sexy" was defined by women with the overall body shape of children. It is ironic then that people are inevitably (but rightly) enraged by pedophiles when this is the image culture has told them is attractive (look at milla jovovich for goodness sakes). Of course, this is all determined by the beauty industry, advertising companies etc. If people we're happy having a few wrinkles a lot of companies would go out of business. Keeping people young looking is big money!

As to the nude shoot, well...publicity!

  • Despite a very American fascination with youth in contemporary Western media, Europeans tend to see the matter differently. Older women on the other side of the pond are most definitely viewed as sex symbols, should they be sexy enough to fit the bill. Age has very little to do with it.

Iconic European beauties such as Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve are most definitely viewed as sexy, whereas in the comparatively adolescent United States, they might be considered too old to be sexy...

    Foolish, if you ask me.

  • I think you need more evidence to make such a claim that the age difference between Lohan and Monroe demonstrates that our society no longer deems "older women" attractive. While Britney Spears (the early years) and Lindsay Lohan are indeed being touted around as such, I would say Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ashley Judd, and Cameron Diaz are great examples of women who can claim the same status as being socially-deemed "sexy" in addition to the two former Mickey Mouse stars.

  • Q: "Is this evidence that older women are considered unattractive in our society?"

Well Tracy, if it had been Helen Mirren, would it have meant that everything was right in the world?

I mean, really - were the women of Monroe's time better served by her photos? The paragon she represented was no doubt an unattainable extreme to many a woman back then (even at 36). The media giveth, and the media taketh away. To argue that it was somehow healthier to obsess over a 36-year old fantasy than over a 21 year old one misses the bigger issue.

And that issue is that women still live in a world where the images created of them, largely by or for men, have tremendous influence over a) what women think, feel and believe of themselves; b) how women treat each other; and c) how women are treated by men. What's even sadder is that women - through supporting the very outlets of this misanthropy (magazines, tv shows, fashion etc) - actually wield a very mighty hand in their own (continued) mental, emotional and societal enslavement.

  • Yeah, I have to agree in saying that I don't think it's evidence that older women are considered unattractive in today's society; it really is just a foolish girl trying to save her career, like...whoever it was that said it...says...(make sense?) Unfortunately, she's trying to save it in the worst ways possible. Next thing ya' know, she'll be posing for Playboy...if they'll accept her, that is.
