Asians seem to have overtime adopted the habits of European culture, So much so that they now seem to want to have a European identity, are Asians not proud of the way they look? or rather have Asians become so deluded by the European image so relentlessly promoted via the media that they no longer appreciate their own identity? The strange effort to adopt the Caucasian accent, the effort to look Caucasian? what's the problem? More and more Asian women seem to be wedding Caucasian men, why? I live in New York, and I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone, I'm seeing this awful trend with my own eyes. Speak up for your selves and let me know what you think.

i had to deal with this very issue regarding colonialism and identity crisis among the asian-american community, specifically in the bay area, because of the dense population here. my background is mixed-heritage and my wife is japanese born and raised.
growing up, i always felt pissed that all the hot abc's (american born chinese) and japayukis always went out with the white kids and the real hot mangos (filipinas) were always with the black kids. i couldn't figure it out.
i grew up in an irish-american foster home and neighborhood so my exposure to asian girls were limited to the affectionate girlfriends of my older irish brothers. the only other asian girls my age always made fun of me and snubbed me pretty bad all throughout elementary school.
luckily, middle school offered a tremendous spectrum of beautiful punk and new wave chicks, mainly jewish and white, cute cholitas (latina), and awesome filipina rocker girls who'd get together with anyone...including me.
in high school, i did start meeting hot asian-am girls but i, too, became more attracted to non-asians more often (because of availability), although i fetished mixed asian girls over all...perhaps, because i'm mixed too. but, when i did get together with asian girls, i felt like i was getting together with my cousin. hot, but ew.
in college, i started meeting asian-am girls who specifically dated only white guys and sort of went out of their way to insult, demean, or ignore asian-am guys. this really pissed me off. they tend to be asian girls who bleach their hair blonde, wear blue contacts, and tell everyone they're hawaiian even if they're obviously fresh off the boat.
after some digging, i realized it had a great deal to do with european colonialism, the portrayal of asian men in general, and the immigrant - assimilation experience.-

from a pinoy (filipino-american) pride comedian, Rex Navarette:
"what do you call a white guy with an asian girl? Yoko John."
"what do you call an asian guy with a white girl? Bruce Lee."
"what do you call one asian guy surrounded by white girls? Tom Vu."
"what do you call one white guy surronded by asian girls? Bible study."-

yea, i don't either. in the end, it's really who you click with. people who date exclusive or prefer certain ethnicities boggle me. maybe it's freudian?
but, definitely, there IS the phenomena of immigrants, not just asians but other non-whites, wishing to become more 'europeanized' or 'americanized' so they encourage their kids to date white kids.
i believe it's a by-product from media proliferation of the definition of 'beauty' and 'success' along with centuries of religious icons that resemble european features only (catholic indoctrination plays a part in how native people regard themselves). you've touched upon that before from our other discourse and i believe it's related.-

i just found out from my wife that eyelid surgery in korea is as common as breast implants here in the US. her opinion is that these cosmetic surgeries are integrally the same...to suffice for low self-esteem caused by constant bombardment of magazines, movies, and money mongering. "i'm sure there's an element of race but it's more about a woman's concept of beauty" she said.
then she told me not to watch tyra banks because "she's the biggest culprit to women's low self-esteem...and she's got a fat ass."
i like fat asses.-

What does this person mean by "caucasian accent"? There's not such thing as a "caucasian accent". Accents develop depending on the environment the person grew up in. If someone of Asian descent grew up in the US they're going to have an American accent in accordance to the region they were raised, so yes, you'll find an Asian person with a southern accent. You'll also find an Asian person with a British accent if that's where they grew up. Seriously, has this person never been around an Asian person or done any traveling outside their region?
I'm an Asian-American woman and I've never felt the need to look more "caucasian" nor has any of my Asian friends. Yes, we dye and highlight our hair occasionally but so does every other girl, regardless of race. It has nothing to do with not being proud of our heritage, it has more to do with wanting to try something new. Believe it or not some Asians are born with "caucasian features" because each ethnic group differs physically, so no, not all Asians look alike despite what some may think. If you find a multi-racial couple it's probably due to love and attraction and less likely about the woman wanting a more caucasian looking child.
It baffles me how ignorant some people can be.-

"MHC (major histocompatibility complex)-dependent mating preferences may also function to avoid inbreeding; a hypothesis consistent with other evidence that MHC genes play a role in kin recognition."*
my asian cousins are really hot though. it used to get real bad when they'd flirt and insist on playing truth or dare. terrible girls!-

Libertys_Fate,
did you date asian guys? growing up here in the west, what was your image of asian men? is your father asian and did that play a role in whether you were attracted to them or not?
in your opinion, why would (other) asian-am women prefer non-asian men and/or deny their asian heritage? is that an individual thing or is there something common between them?
i'd appreciate your wisdom.-

I'm asian... I so rather be caucasian.. but eh.. I'm certainly not going to do surgery to change that... maybe a little more A&F.....

Liberty Fate- please do your research.....
In the late 1800s, Chinese, and eventually other Asians, were excluded from American citizenship, as were other races, and these restrictions were ordained by what race? Caucasians. So, An inferiority complex can be reasonably attributed to Asians why? well, due to the ignorant depiction of Asians in American Culture, as well as the ignorant depiction of many other races via the American Neo Conservative media complex, by none other than what race? Caucasians. I'm sure you can attest to the accuracy of these statements. No one can deny that Caucasians have perpetuated a false image of superiority by demeaning other ethnic identities, such as the Native Americans, African Americans, and the race in context Asians,by subtly and sometimes blatantly applying stereo-typical dispositions. These statements cannot be repudiated, because the evidence is strewn all over the floor of American Culture.-

Liberty_Fate-
In regards to my mention of Caucasian accents, I was referring to people who are native to Asian countries, in other words immigrants who go out of their way to adopt or apply an accent other than their own in this case ''Caucasian'' and yes Caucasians of northern American decent do have an accent that can be distinguished from other accents. it would be quite irrational for me to direct these observations to Asian-American natives. In case you weren't aware, people can cognitively apply specific accents, the reasons may be socio-economic in nature, or it might be an attempt to eliminate an inferiority complex,
and another reason being an attempt to ''fit in'', which is a recurring reason among many Asians, and reasonably so, because, ''Caucasians have belittled the Ethnic identity of Asians in the media, so as a bi-product of a constant exposure to American propaganda, Asians have developed the delusion that ''Caucasians'' are superior, hence the awful attempt to alter their physical appearance, surgically, for cosmetic purposes, which is merely a guise concealing an even deeper problem, one that may even be irreversible due to the prolonged exposure of ethnic slander by the American ''Caucasian'' Neo- Conservative media complex.... wooh let me catch my breath here, LOL-

hey mobius, there's also the phenomena of westerners' fascination of all things asian, especially japanese. it can also be said that, by dating asians, westerners are trying to be more ninja, more samurai, more techie, more feng shui, more holistic, more humble, more everything positive about asian culture. so, it's not all bad. it goes both ways.
and, since no one has made a penis joke yet, cross cultural dating might be "more to do with wanting to try something new."
plus, i do believe sincerely, that mixed heritage couples are a step closer to world peace.
asian-american pride is very strong and heavy here in the pacific. they mobilize effectively and constitute a strong presence economically, artistically, and, yes, sexually. cross-cultural dating is common and westerners are the ones more apt to adapt than the other way around. again, it might be because of the dense population here.-

I'm not in anyway against cross-cultural dating bro, my girlfriend is Siberian born and raised in a Russian Oriented cultural society, you can't get anymore cross-cultural than that. I'm against socio-economic preference and bias, and preference on the basis of social status. That's all homey, I'm not hating on anyone who chooses to date outside of their race or culture, we are all essentially one culture. We are all just different emanations of the same source, It's all Love when love is true and not prejudice.-

Asians are very similar to caucasians but they are just a lot smaller, in size & everything. I don't want to be white, but I do want a smaller & taller nose! Many white guys like me, including other races too. And I LOVE caucasian guys! They soo sweet & treat me wayyy better than asian guys.

It's interesting that Tyra was calling herself straight up Black. It triggered a few thoughts that I'd like to vomit out and have discussed.
It's weird how wired race is linked to culture. I'm pretty sure Tyra is calling herself Black because she's African-American. But, I don't think there's an African-American means Black. They're often related, but not necessarily one in the same. I'm Black but not African-American and, to me, Tyra is African-American but not just Black.
I don't look mixed at all. You'd think I'd be able to point out my home village on a map, lol. However, since I identify more with the British culture, I consider myself European. I'm not what people assume a European to look like, but that's what I am.
Many people consider race more than aesthetics. I don't. You either look predominately like one race (ie black), or you're mixed and you can still choose to identify with whichever ethnic group you want (ie African-American, Afro-European, Caribbean, etc).
In sum, I think race is defined by how you look despite "how you feel," and ethnicity is what you choose.
N.B.
To be fair, race in terms of phenotypical appearances is the most accepting meaning of the word. However, the phenotypical divides of race account for so little of one's DNA. African-Americans are more related to White Americans than to Africans, for example. Despite how they look. A report said that there's actually more of an American race, more so than white or Asian. However, I don't know how else to categorize those color groups, so I still use the word "race."
