The new pet sterilization ordinance requires most dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered by the time they are 4 months old.

The ordinance, signed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, will take effect Oct. 1 and aims to settle the euthanization problem in Los Angeles' animal shelters every year.

The city's animal shelters took in 50,000 cats and dogs last year and euthanized approximately 15,000 at a cost of 2 million dollars.

  • This is great!!! So many unwanted puppies and kittens get euthanized every year in LA -- the shelters are full of 'em. Hopefully this will have a great impact on the lives of all animals. Thanks Shannon for posting it!

  • Jules, I beg to differ......

There are better ways to deal with population control. This is an outrageous hijacking of our (and our pets) civil rights.

So, what happens when the human population in LA gets out of control. They're not going to get my or my dogs testicles. We will have as many babies as we want, thank you much.

We needs more responsible parents, if anything, to keep their pups from humping strangers at the dog park.

  • smorrisey: There is a large human population in this country that should not be allowed to procreate. This idea of having 5+ children is ridiculous. Most of the earth's problems stem right down to overpopulation and we should apply the same logic for humans as we do with the rest of the animals.

I'm happy to see an entire city being so responsible. Common sense isn't so common now, and if it takes a law to ensure that people are being responsible, I'm all for it.

  • Hmm, I'll have to think about this one with the animals. Definitely a big no to limitations on human reproduction.

I don't like the idea of killing thousands and thousands of animals every year. People who have pets bare the responsibility for this terrible thing. What's PETA's position on this I wonder?

  • It's about time. I hope this same law gets passed in Northern California too. We'll still have strays, but they'll be much fewer and more of them will be adopted.

  • As someone that has had to put homeless dogs and cats to sleep, I can appreciate this law. This will also cut down on the backyard breeders trying to make money on breeding genetically deficient designer mutts. I have no problem with real breeders, the ones that do extensive testing and showing to prove that their dog is good enough and healthy enough to pass on genetics.
Smorrisey seems to think that human sexuality and canine sexuality are similar. A dog has only a hormonal drive to mate. They do not do it for either emotional or physical pleasure. Removing this drive, particularly when you are not planning on breeding them is a much better idea than keeping them intact. In the case of females, there are several clear medical reasons to do this. In the case of males, there are health benefits, not as many as in females, but they are still there. It also stops them from busting out the semen on pillows and toys.
