Meet visionary artist Leonard Knight. While traveling across America, Knight found a secluded spot and decided to build a monument to Jesus. Fourteen years later, Salvation Mountain is a harlequin-colored, three-story religious monument made out of mud, old paint and adobe, surrounded by an encampment of brightly painted vehicles and elaborate adobe structures. Knight’s mountain and message are now known internationally, and he gets daily visitors from around the world. In recent years, Knight has gained significant respect from the folk art community and his work is now on display in the Visionary Folk Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.

  • (Yes, this was in Into the Wild). Great pod! First, obviously, you found an amazing character, and it really carries the piece. You have some excellent shots here -- I love that you don't have to use much footage from sit-down interviews because you have such a bounty of good action shots to dub the interviews over. You really spent some time getting some good visuals and it shows. You paced it excellently, with some good natural sound as well. Great job!

  • The pod couldn't have much more of an interesting character, and the creator does a great job at letting Leonard just do his thing and speak his mind. I love the part where he's shoveling the mud out of the wheelboro and talking to the camera at the same time. Leonard just breathes faith, hard work and persistence, and the pod leaves the viewer with no doubt of that by letting him interact with his own environment and reveal himself to the camera. The character development really stood out to me in this pod.

  • I was raised catholic and since i've reached the age of reason started questioning the motive of religion... This man, leonard, has compelled me in the ways i've needed. His virtual selflessness and his motivation are things that i had thought were eradicated from this earth with the thanks of capitolism and complacency. I've been tired of being told who my role models are or should be. Leonard Is more of a role model than your Tiger Woods' or Lance Armstrong's could ever dream to be. He may not be your classic hero, but he is a hero of some kind. He may not be on the front page of TIME or entertainment weekly, but he'll forever be in the front of my heart, Right next to that place he's reserved for Jesus. Everyone should take a little pride knowing that they are of the same species as this man. I'm not saying I'm a believer in the respects that this man has shown me God, or Jesus, but i've been sold to the fact that I'm a believer in this man, myself and mankind in general. His genuinity is something to strive for in ourselves and in our world. And i love the little song he plays at the end, haha perfection! Leonard, you are beyond an artist, beyond Van Gogh or michaelangelo. Just know you always have a place to rest in Pa. Thank You Leonard and Tilapia for bringing his story right to me. Now THAT is current....

  • Okay, it wasn't THAT amazing. I can accept that his earnesty is a breath of fresh air, but it's almost like you're diefying him, fattyj. I don't think that his selflessness is that unseen in society. There's this rastafarian man in my city, named "Birdman," who has decorated his bike in much the same manner as leonard. He drags around this huge trailor, which is also engulfed in colorful junk. His motto is "Bringing Jamaica to Burlington," as he is a sort of Rasta missionary. Not in an evangelical sense, though. My point in this tangent is that you just need to look hard enough, and you'll find certain people who have taken life in an artistic direction, whether inspired by religion, or anything else. Leonard seems like a good guy, but let's be sensible. He is not messianic.

  • I'm not saying he's a messiah, I'm just saying this POD was putt together so well it sold me in ways the original producer wasn't expecting... it was great cinematography, music, and character development. Tilapia films filled me with emotion that I needed to feel, It was just that leonard happened to be the vehicle of this emotion, far from a messiah, yet still a force to be reckoned with. got me?

  • Yeah. That's a lot easier to understand. I think your wording in the previous post was a bit misleading, but I get it.

  • Wow this is a great character, and he mixes worshiping God and creating art so well it is hard to tell whether he is the most religious person I've seen in awhile or the most artistic or both. Also, the progression of the mountain itself and the problems it has had makes this even more interesting. It is like it is a character of it's own. Amazing work to you and Leonard.

  • I just think this pod is great, the message that the man conveys through his art is inspiring and real. God is good, all the time :)

  • I want to grow up to be just like this guy. THere is nothing more authentic than what you just saw. Junky artists are where its at, and throw in a mountain for Jesus and you have the best character ever conceived. I think I'm going to cry now... tears of joy no doubt.

  • I cant get over it, this is the best POD I have ever seen. It is so well made and so interesting that I cant take my eyes off of it. I dont know what it is about this old man, he is just so interesting. This is totally something I would do... I should go now and become his apprentice if he is still alive. (sorry Current TV Student Executive Producer position.. Will...) Where is this mountain again?

  • I love this pod so much.

  • Jesus was a dark skinned man, and he definitely smoked Cannabis sativa and if he were here on the planet today he would most likely own a smoke shop.
