Thought the sun was just a great big ball of burning gas? Well guess what? It, um, is...
Delving into the structure of that gigantic flaming sphere, however, uncovers a feast of interesting scientific information, detailing how and of what the sun is made up. Weirdly, they pretty much all sound like cheesy nightclubs.

Richjm...I have to squeegie my monitor after spitting water all over it. "Weirdly, they pretty much all sound like cheesy nightclubs. " You are pretty dead-on.
Seriously though, good graphic, the link though is a bit spartan. I'd like to see some temperatures and densities of the regions.-

Ha, sorry about that Jordan. I'll buy you a beer at Chromosphere to make up for it.
The surface, or photosphere, of the sun is about 5,500 degrees Celsius or 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The sunspots are 'only' about 4,000 degrees Celsius or 6,700 degrees Fahrenheit.
The chromosphere is about 1,900 miles/3,000 kilometres thick. Where it meets the photosphere, it's about 4,300 degrees Celsius or 7,800 Fahrenheit. The chromosphere's temperature varies throughout. Where it merges with the corona, it's about 100,000 Celsius and 180,000 Fahrenheit. Temperatures rise to 2,000,000 Celsius or 3,600,000 Fahrenheit.
At the core the sun is a whopping 15 million degrees Celsius or 27 million degrees Farenheit.
And here's an interesting video about the sun, just to close today's class. -
Sick, thanks. As long as I can return the favor at Prominence or Core, your choice.
