The Beanpot championship will again expand from the ice to the table this year as students from Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern University, and Harvard University compete not only for best team on ice, but also bragging rights for the most voracious appetite and best college band. All proceeds raised will again go to the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care in Boston which received $20,000 from last year’s event. The Qdoba Rice and Bean Pot Competition is kicked off with a band nomination campaign. This year, 16 bands have been nominated between the four schools and a text message voting platform decides which band from each school will go to the final competition. On January 25, 2008, the band with the highest number votes from each school will be selected as the representative to compete in the final event at the Paradise lounge on February 7, 2008. The winning band will be decided on based on crowd cheers at the final event.
The second aspect of the competition is the burrito eating contest. Participants, who must be a registered student of the four Universities, can register at any Boston Qdoba location, or by logging onto www.riceandbeanpot.com. Preliminary rounds will take place at participating Qdoba and key campus locations throughout the city beginning on January 29, 2008. The registered teams of four from each school will compete against one another at the preliminaries and will be judged based on speed. The team that collectively finishes four burritos- one burrito a person- in the shortest amount of time will be chosen to represent their school at the finals.
All winning teams will then advance to the Qdoba Rice and Bean Pot Competition finals on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 7:00 pm at the Paradise Rock Lounge. The winning burrito eating team will receive a trip to Mexico while the winning band will receive a solo live performance at the Paradise Rock Lounge. As usual, all proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care.
About The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care
The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care was created ten years ago by former Boston Bruin Cam Neely, his brother Scott and sisters Shaun and Christine to honor the memory of their parents who both lost their battles with cancer at a young age. The Foundation’s mission is to help cancer patients and their families during and after treatments, to assure that patients with a cancer diagnosis will have access to all of the care they need, and to expedite treatment and research efforts.
