The Guardian, who carried out the survey, found that opposition extends beyond the "usual suspects" of the 23-strong Socialist Campaign group, with more mainstream ministers sharing their concerns.
The government may win the support of some Tory MPs who fear being portrayed as soft on terrorism, and of Ian Paisley's nine Democratic Unionist MPs.

Under current UK anti-terror laws you can be locked up and repeatedly questioned by police for up to 28 days without being charged. You might not even be told why you are there. The Government is now proposing to extend this period to 42 days.
