In 1959, when Alaska and Hawaii were added to the Union, the flag had to be redesigned and, apparently, thousands of ideas were submitted, this among them. According to American Heritage Magazine, the winning design which we, of course, now use, was designed by a high school student who received (of course!) a B- for lack of originality!
