Nobel prize-winning author Doris Lessing fears Barack Obama will be assasinated if he becomes the first black US President.

Lessing, 88, said: "He would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him."

Lessing, who won the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature, said: "The best thing would be if they (Clinton and Obama) were to run together."

She told a Swedish newspaper: "Hillary is a very sharp lady. It might be calmer if she were to win and not Obama."

Lessing, known for her fiery statements, did not say who she thought would carry out the assassination.

  • OBAMA will be safe if he chooses well his VP.

  • He'll be fine!

  • Yeah, Kucinich for VP and they'll never assassinate him. Or, more likely, Edwards.
    ILiveonaClock
  • Exactly Clock. It would be his best life insurance. As long as they didn't hang out together where they could get them both at once.
  • yea no worries...after seeing his voting record i think uncle tom here would be plenty safe from the industrial military complex since we all know they are the ones that usually do that sort of dirty work.

    warmongering is bad mmmmmkay!!!!

  • ablindeye, We won't know who he truly is until after the election. Look what happened to John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich. We know who the others are. We have a chance that he will be good. No matter what he is our best bet.
  • best bet? So this is all a gamble? lets just roll the dice and hope for the best because murdochvision tells us we can't win? Someone today brought up voting records so i figured I better take a peek and Obama has voted for everything bigger military...and thats when he actually voted...49% were NV (ie, No Vote or Present).

Don't believe you cannot witness upsets just because the corporacrats say so and quite being scared to vote for who you know is the underdog.
Murdochvision turns the whole thing into a high school popularity contest and the ones that perpetuate it are straight up shills.

ooo ooo i better cast for what they tell me is popular? Since I, as a common dimwitted american, lack the intelligence to make the decision for myself? They know whats best for you and me...don't worry...

    now ssshhhh....

  • this is truly despicable fear mongering. ...I'm offended by those few unfortunate public figures who assert this notion. Most of them are ultra-conservative, cranky, anglo-geezers who live in a time before the civil rights movement. I doubt many smart people buy into it.. This is shady political smear tactics at their worst.

...incase i didnt make myself clear, i believe uttering and multiplying this notion is reprehensible and irresponsible.

ideally, the public discourse would strictly revolve around policy. This campaign season has already gotten quite personal and is sure to get much worse....but this is different....this is elitist/supremacist propaganda.

injecting this manure into the conversation is a hateful attempt to scare and disempower minority candidates and voters.

a couple of current vlogs i think are relevant to share here:
conversation thread with a vlog from contributor ChristopherJay who shares Mrs. Lessing's sentiments:

and here, Chuck D, front-man for the legendary hip hop group Public Enemy, ( to my surprise) expresses a subtle Obama for vice president endorsement?

  • I believe that she should have kept the idea to herself merely so as not to suggest it to those who might not think of it. BUT, I agree with her that the Pres./V.Pres. combination will be key. And, while she didn't suggest who it might be, it will obviously be, as it usually is, some extremist conservative (I use the term "conservative" in the worst possible way. For example, someone such as Pat Robertson, who recently suggested we assassinate another world leader.)
    dkincheloe
  • Didn't 50 Cent say the same thing a few weeks back? He thinly veiled by suggesting America was "not ready" for a black president.
    Foraggio
  • She should have kept quiet. Her NP lends credence to what she said that it doesn't deserve. Anyone off reasonable intelligence has already thought of it we just as a general rule don't talk about it.
  • What makes me sick about Lessing's statement is it again plays cynical to the idea we can progress in this country.

Yes it'd be a volatile change to have someone for a different color and of a different name heritage in the White House but this is America damnit. With Clinton or McCain -- while I think both would be better than Current Occupant, ti's setting the bar real low. It's a choice that reeks of "Don't expect much from yoru government and it wills urprise you" type cynicism.

This country will not strive to be anything more under Hillary or John McCain. It's accepting the status quo.

I want to be mroe, I think America want sto be more.
    jpfdeuce
  • jpfdeuce, I don't think it's about color. I expect he will step on some important toes. I expect he is going to do a lot of things he isn't talking about yet. If he did the media would shut him down. He didn't do the kind of work he has done and not have some plans to make things better.
  • Let's just hope you guys vote for someone based on their policies and not on their colour, race, or sex, for that matter.

If Obama is the best man for the job, let him do it. If he's not, vote for someone you believe would do it better.
    Foraggio
  • Obama is too popular for race to be a factor. I think people are just hoping for something better.
  • i think there is a chance for this to happen, because unfortunately there are many people in this world who do not want a mulatto president to the extent of insane action.

if he does win i really hope this does not happen besides the fact that it would be horrible it would be a huge blow to America in the face of our current issues.

  • It's happened to white presidents, so why Barack would be any different, I don't know.

The point is that Obama would be at risk from assassination regardless of his colour, simply because he is the US President, a highly desirable target for nuts all over the world. They won't discriminate because he's black, white, yellow, green or blue. He's just the US President and in some people's eyes "must die".

I hope it doesn't happen, too, but if it does, it won't be becauase he's black, unless the US has a more twisted, backwards society than all of us outside it already think it does.
    Foraggio
  • It would be a worse blow to Obama, to Hell with what it would do to the country.

  • Race will be a factor until all bloodlines are crossed and mixed into one color that can't be readily labelled. Worldkind has decided who is more superior by color since it's beginning. Now, all it takes is one hateful person and one weapon to decide another person's fate. Yes. In America, it's that easy. We still have the right to speculate about these horrors, whether others like it or not.
    huntre
  • actually it does matter for the country if our president where to be killed, thats what happens when you become president, you are rather important.

do not get me wrong no one deserves to be killed especially for something as superficial as race, however when a whole nation is in a position of vulnerability due to such an incident you should take it into consideration rather than brush it off as something insignificant. so yea you do have to worry about the rest of the country.
    AswegoAsdego
  • I can understand why an 88 year old would be afraid of a possible assassination. But imagine a world where Obama survives, it would give confidence to Americans who are now justifiably concerned. A confidence, that might finally heal the divide this country has suffered since it's origins.
    uroborus8
  • Ah, the all powerful "They"

"They" seem to do alot of things, in this case, "They" will kill Obama.

Most people think a crazed loon named LH Oswald killed Kennedy, but there are some who believe the establishment ("They") did it.

Let me make clear that Obama is in no danger of being assassinated any more than any other president, unless you believe that the American establishment has a secret cabal of people who assassinate presidents who shake things up to much - which is pretty much a crazed conspiracy theory.

Plenty of people will and do resent the change Obama represents, plenty of people also resent George Bush's failed policy decisions. George Bush has a higher-than-average, but still low, chance of being assassinated. Likewise for a President Obama. I don't think race really comes into the factor much/at all.

If you think the Klan or somesuch would kill Obama, well, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure they'd be that stupid.

  • I hate to do it, but here is the link for the KKK. Apparently, there is a rumor that they endorsed Obama, and they want to clear up the "mistake."

They say, "We pray for the day when we will see a strong candidate; a God fearing white man or woman, who will restore the principles of the Constitution, promote free enterprise versus a planned economy, put military troops on the border to stop illegal immigration, put an end to the social experiment called forced integration which has had a devastating effect on all races, and return our schools to a wholesome environment of learning by removing homosexual indoctrination".

Racism is alive and well and it is dangerous. Obama supporters, though, should not shy away from supporting Obama for fear of putting him in danger. It only makes people like the author of the KKK message even stronger.

  • Even for an 88 year old woman, planting a seed to do any harm to a president based on color is not wise...this is why I feel a woman should not be president, due to the natural order of Gods wisdom knowing a woman works off emotions, and not 100 percent from wisdom...I rather see obama be president, He is the best I have seen ever in history...A very wise man period ! Humble and a Man of God, A true American ! Fear is not a factor when U become President, That is part of the Job knowing U have non American in this world! Peace to all!

  • Some have been comparing Obama's campaign to Abraham Lincoln's. Check out the story and thread here.
    abbym0308
  • Some of us are old enough to remember the numerous assassination attempts on our leaders... and fearing the same fate for Obama is not ridiculous. Usually those who were the most charismatic were the ones targeted. It does not matter whether the attempt was successful or not, just the fact that someone gave it a try. Ronald Reagan, Robert Kennedy, JFK, and of course, MLKing... Gerald Ford is the one who was not particularly sexy, and he may have been a target because of his controversial Nixon pardon...

Seriously, the best thing to keep Obama safe would be for Clinton to be VP, because the kind of person who would fear a black man in power will think twice if the plot to kill him puts a woman there instead...

  • "you can paint a pretty picture, but you can't predict the weather"

american's hate is sown deep into the fiber of its very core. seeds planted. fields picked. life erected. hate harvested on the backs of some of this countries most skilled movers and shakers.

like most of you, i do not want to see any bloodshed. i also cannot turn a blind eye and say that there aren't folks in this country still unwilling to move forward into progress and change.

anything can happen. to be spiritually realistic, it's already done. however, we cannot live in fear. that wouldn't bring about progress.
  • Such is the danger of making history.
    brianjhong
  • are you serious? i think the notion is absurd.
  • ablindeye you used the term "uncle tom" in the complete wrong context (way at the top), that actually comes across quite offensively, and foraggio I dont think anyone should acknowledge anything 50 cent says. Why would it matter who his vp is? think about it, if he is asassinated because he's black(as per the original topic, much to the dismay of myself and everyone else-especially those who said he would be asassinated for his potential progressive policies-which has nothing to do with the original topic), I dont think it will make the killer think twice when he reallizes a white person will take over.

  • It's only logical, that some ignorent idiot will try to do something like that...
  • Doris Lessing is a bit alarmist about the possibility of an Obama assassination, but the Star Telegram published an eyebrow raising article saying that Federal officers had halted weapons screening at an Obama Rally... One wonders ... not everyone wants change.

  • The CIA/FBI killed John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King the same way Jesus was killed for inspiring people to promote Peace.
Yes, I too am afraid for this Dear Man, and hope he has a bullet proof vest and hood on. Only the bad men kill the good ones. Please be safe dear one....Don't die too soon.

  • That comment is essentially terrorism. (Amazing how that word sticks in the mouth from overuse.) Can they keep us from voting for our candidate simply by suggesting he might be murdered if elected? Where is the rule of the people?
    modustype
  • Uh, duh he would definitely be assassinated or at least an attempt... or else something else might happen. I am a little freaked out that the current regime is so blase about being in power and feel no threat by the real possibility that a democrat will be in the white house. It seems a little too calm of a demeanor to have when they hold so much power and have been so blatant about it's use. I don't know, I think Obama is a great speaker and he's charasmatic. Although I personally don't get why he's so popular and why so many people feel he is so against the war when he's done nothing as a Senator to stop it from continuing, most Americans are morons and get taken by good speakers. Hence so many convert religions, one pastor is more convincing than the other, and why they believe and devote so much time to religion in the first place. They eat that shit up like apple pie, so I'm not surprised about how popular Obama is right now. But seriously, I'm not sure if it will happen now (a black president I mean) and if it does there has to be a reason why the current administration don't see it as a threat that there could be a democratic leader in the white house.

Also as great a speaker as someone maybe, there words mean nothing until they meet a tragic end and become martyrs. Martin Luther King's death made his words that much more vivid for people, it made sense out of his thinking, of the need for change. Kennedy's death offered a way for his ideas (actually Bobby's ideas) to be ushered in and new legislation passed. And it seems if his (Obama's) words will have any true meaning he will either be a great leader or his death will make sense of his ideas for what America needs for a better future. I'm not sure any of these candidates are really on "our side", but the only one I'd put in there (the white house) is the one no one wants. Because my intelligence and instincts tell me to do so. And like I said most Americans are morons. Haha.
    Mafioso
  • actually he has voted against the war several times as a senator, and the patriot act as well. and wtf kind of idiot are you, the ignorantly blind religious people make up the conservative party, and i cant BELIEVE you just said that martin luther king's words meant nothing until he was killed. you sir are a moron-your intelligence, hahaha ya buddy you'd like to think wouldn't you.

  • Like Dave Chappelle says...he'll just need to choose his V.P. wisely. "Ain't the right, V.P. Santiago?"
