Israel pulls troops from Gaza

The Israeli army is withdrawing its troops from the Gaza Strip as military operations there are 'winding down'. This comes after almost a week of intense Israeli assaults on the territory which killed more than 100 people. Hamas has called this welcomed withdrawal a 'victory' for Palestine, and the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, has suspended all contact with Israel over the attacks.

This spate of violence prompted international outcry, and was condemned by EU officials and the UN.

  • I do not hate Israel. I know that the majority of the population honestly wants peace, I truly hope that President Bush is successful in creating a Palestinian State. I think that this latest attack into Gaza has just creatd another generation of resentment towards Israel. Israel wants peace, Palestinians want their own land and to no longer live under a brutal humiliating occupation. Israel wants peace and security, the Palestinians want their own State. Has to be a solution in there some way. I wonder what the answer is?

  • Following the Israeli army withdrawing its troops from the Gaza Strip earlier today, the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has warned that although his troops have retreated, it is not the end of the Israeli operation in Gaza.

Reports already claim over one hundred people have been killed in the violence over the last week.

  • I find it nauseating that all resentment and blame should be placed on Israel, when, in fact, Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization by the U.S., incites this type of Israeli reaction. It feeds off of the Palestinian hatred of Israel and therefore is not an agent of peace, but of unrest and instability in the region. The Palestinians should be holding their leaders (including Hamas) accountable - and this includes questioning the motive behind firing rockets into Israel from this region (thus making them a target). As for Israel's assault, would the U.S. allow Cuba to fire rockets into Miami and brush it off without retaliation? I think you can figure that one out on your own.
Peace will only happen when both leaders and citizens on both sides will it. I don't think either Palestinians or Israelis will forget the past...all I can hope for is that both come to the realization that their hatred is destructive and that tolerance (and hopefully forgiveness – but I’m skeptical) will lead all to a two state solution with peaceful borders.

  • Wolfer83, there is no way to peacefully take and occupy other peoples land. Violence is the inevitable result of occupation. Please see every war in history as reference.

  • Who then is supporting the military mindset here...could it be the United States of America? We supply the weapons, the planes, the bombs...Why?

  • How come it is ok for Palestinian's to use violence as seen with the thousands of Kassam rockets hitting homes, schools and killing people- but suddenly it is violence, when an army operation goes in to stop rockets? The news, much like it is represented here, is extremely bias. How can you even talk about peace when one rocket is fired, let alone 50 in the morning? All of you sit in the comfort of your houses in America, preaching- but can you point out Israel and Gaza on a map? What would you do if your peace partner shot rockets at your people? Stop talking about peace, which is this unattainable goal that leaders want for recognition and a Nobel peace prize- we just need quiet, on both sides. Nobody should have to die for a little bit of quiet. Nobody on either side.

  • I agree with you journalist_pal... Israel is consistently targeted and blamed for situations like this. Israel should NOT be the only accountable side battle for what people are trying to call justice. Palestine should not hold Hamas accountable, but instead have their leaders take responsibility and try to finally stop what will inevitably become a bitter end for both sides. Peace will never come from this never-ending hatred and violence. It is up to leaders to realize this, because they are the only ones who can put an end to this.
