  • Have you watched Nimrod Nation - Too bad these guys were not on that team despite of - or because of - the allegations of racism again a Native American player's achievements.

  • I enjoyed this, but I would have liked to have you show some of your interviews. I think this would have given it a more personal feel.

  • Covelogibbs... I agree. We hoping to get some feedback like this and film some more. I believe this project has a lot of potential.

  • I have a feeling there is more to this. One thing you may not realize is that many people outside the rez have no idea what your life is like. In particular I am thinking about the big East and West Coast cities. They tend to be very isolated from the middle of the country. Some of the most basic things are news to many people and could make this pod more interesting. The things you start mentioning about bank accounts at 18 and where does the casino money go? Thats all great stuff and could be filled out. maybe a touch more history or particular story on those issues. I like the basketball story as a central starting point and ending point. As was said above. it always makes a big difference to see the person talking. If it is camera you/they are shy about you could always shoot profile or some other angle. When you are amoung friends you have more freedom to shoot interviews over and over again. This may make it more fun and everyone can get more comfortable with speaking while a camera is on.
It is good. Mess around with it some more.

  • Thanks for the comment twodee. I'll share them with Derek. We do want to do some more with this and this was a good start. Things have really changed for him since making this documentary. A lot of people were unhappy and many new tribal officials were elected including some of Derek's family so he's hoping things will change. He might take a whole new approach now that some of his concerns might be addressed.

  • Hi
My name is Derek. My Bros and I are from Acoma Pueblo. We shot this a little ways from my house. This is where we play ball on a good day! our casino is making a lot of money, but they won't give the kids any money for a new basketball court. now thats f***up,but now we have new tribal offcials. so i hope we well see some changes!
thanks for all the good comments.

  • acoma....? isnt that just outside alb? like near grants? or gallup?
    okinawanmajik
  • Acoma is near Grants. It's about 60 miles west of Albuquerque and 20 miles from Grants. Gallup is farther west but on the same road (I-40).

  • thought so, ive been there. i love gallup. i mean the town sucks by and large, but its my favorite town in the world....dont ask. but i met a few people from the rez and i love em. im seminole but dont know too much of my family's native history, just that we are and a few other small things like how we came to being. but whenever im going towards cali or phx. i make it a point to stop in acoma...just past that big casino at that small gas station, grants up on the hill....and i always stop in gallup. get sweated by the bums!

  • ever heard of culture shock clique? quise frejo? and brian frejo? they have a sister named happy frejo? they do alot for native american issues around the country. from oklahoma. ive known them since i was a kid. well teenager. they were in the new world movie...brian and quise did the soundtrack. if you like them to come out there and do a show for the area....let me know.
    okinawanmajik
  • This is a really neat area actually. On the surface, it isn't perfect but when you start digging and get off the interstate, you find some real cool people and cultural experiences you can't get anywhere else. I love it here and don't plan on moving.

  • you know what...its funny, ive seen those B ball courts before! long time ago when i rolled thru there. i was like 16 and i drove from oklahoma to san diego. i stopped in every indian town along I-40. if i can remember correctly..because i havnt been thru in maybe 4 years....but i think you all got new houses? in maybe 2000? 99 time frame? i know gallup is more and more built every time i go thru there. and i was proud of them when they got that sonic commercial. I love that area. i always told myself that if i ever came into a shit load of money..even though i cannot move on native lands thats not my tribe...I always wanted to open a Native school near Gallup or grants....maybe in the middle...a prep school. get some funds out there. bring the people up...you know.
    okinawanmajik
  • Thanks for the great comment okinawanmajik

A prep school would be really neat. They have a Native middle school but the drop out is really high in 9-12 and could be kids from the reservation school hitting the public high school and getting frustrated or overlooked.
