Acacia, which contains both DMT and Tryptamine, was a common drug of the Israelites. Burning bushes, and chats with God on Mount Sinai, might have been trips.

"Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

'As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics,' Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday."

28 comments // Moses was a tripper

Well Moses also parted the sea, did some plagues and much more. Apparently Moses was an addict - and so was everyone else.

Thank you for posting this article. I'm sure that Moses did alter his consciousness in order to gain a new perspective on the World.
God knows that the current perspective of worshiping material possessions isn't working.
    Think about it.

It sickens me as science continues to advance and rationalism overtakes irrational idealism, aka religion, millions continue to die in the name of God.

@tikiman...I fight fire, not stoke it. So, sorry if things aren't ablaze enough for you.

To me, faith is the belief in something in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. This article should not be an affront to anyone who has faith that the events of the bible were acts of God.

This article piqued my interest because I honestly believe that psychedelia is a major force in spirituality. I lament my abstinence of psychedelic drugs. To wax hypothetical, what if this class of drugs didn't "explain away" the hand of God, but made it clearer? What if our consciousness is what separates us from the immortals? What if, through these experiences, we can throw off the dogma of organized religion and actually commune with a common entity within us all?

    Wouldn't that be more exciting?

    well said J.R....

Personally, i find that the mysteries of the Universe are 99.99999% time easily and readily and Probably attributed to something rational and easily explained - but that's not really the point in having mysteries, is it?

Sometimes, it's more fun to believe just because you can, not because you must or because it makes the most sense...

and honestly, how likely is it that when Moses parted the red sea, called plagues from heaven, and struck water from a rock every single person who was with him was intoxicated all the time?

By saying that Moses was high on this one instance, you are also saying that the whole 40 year trek through the desert was equal to a whole 40 years of drug use...

do not forget, that Moses wrote the first 5 books of the bible. Why is it then, that there are no rediculous outings in Leviticus? or Numbers?

now might be a good time to ask the question, Who remembers what it was like smoking pot for the first time?

For me, it was so different from the reality that I was used to that I barely knew how to handle myself.

Every drug is a new angle of light on the "hologram" - points if you know whose metaphor i'm referring to. A diversity of perspectives, which mind altering substances offers, allows for a greater encompassing of reality.

It's not that we're living an illusion. it's that we're living only part of the reality.
    a very small part.

Jordan, please watch this and consder an alternate definition of "faith" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YZ0YfPqat4

god works in mysterious ways i guess. this does not budge my faith any, probably true and probably not the only drug they were using.

swiyyah, you are aware that it is very unlikely the ancient hebrew tribes were ever in Egypt as "slaves" correct? There's certainly no evidence for it outside of biblical stories.

t's not that we're living an illusion. it's that we're living only part of the reality.
    a very small part.

Ekhart Tolle in his book claims that mankind is enslaved by a mental illness called ego. Ego is the false self acting out in pride and materialistic desire. Ego is the illusion that we live masquerading as real people.

Mind altering drugs such as psychedelics and even cannabis do open up our minds to a larger reality and allow us to break free from the ego and embrace a power greater than ourselves. Ego is self centeredness and detachment from the whole of life and humanity. Ego only recognizes it's own power and psychological validation. Ego manipulates the hearing of a thing to validate itself.

The emptied spirit devoid of labels preceding all thought and action without judgment is the closest thing to god and reality you are going to get.

"Be still and know that I am; God."

Being still is abandoning the ego and emptying the mind of all thoughts. What a better way to do that than with mind altering drugs...

Also I posted a link a few weeks ago to a documentary called "Fire Baptism; the lost sacraments" and it was about the "Cannabis Grease" or "holy anointing oil" that was used to anoint the high priests and religious leaders. It was loaded up with Cannabis.

I don't see anything wrong with this idea. Native Americans, for example, use opiates to get closer to God (or whatever higher power you chose). What one calls a hallucination may be another's spiritual awakening.

@stephenthomson: I was moved by that video. Thanks for adding that to the conversation. You should make a proper story of that one.

@tikiman: I have faith that all order we see is the shadow of something larger; I am not at liberty to assume an understanding. We grasp at meaning. We know that there is something more. We listen to stories, generations old, and postulate. Knowledge is humbling; that is one of the few truths left.

    @huntre: Exactly...

good for you Jordan Roth. Loved your comment.

Why are u questioning Moses on drugs, I wonder what kind of drugs someone has to be on to walk on water?????

I think whoever researched this must have been on drugs

Oh yea and another thing, In order for Moses to be on drugs then I wonder how the mother of the man that walked on water came to be??? Pretty powerful drugs i must say to be pregnant and a virgin at the same time, people seem to forget that without Moses without the jews there would be no continuation of Christianity or Islam.
So you're saying that without drugs there would be no religion in the world????? give it up

    rahonda -

you stated that if moses hallucinated the burning bush and what not -then he, by default also halucinated the forty years in the desert and so did his followers...

obviously, you've never experimented with psychotropics... It only takes one moment - with the right kind of atmosphere, the right people, and the right drug induced mindset - to change everything you ever believed before...
I submit that it was possible - NAY - likely, that moses was high off his rocker when he talked to a bush on a mountain (i mean, really, were there any witnesses to his speaking to a burning bush? - NO) - and when he returned to the people after wandering aimlessly through the mountains, he spoke of the glory of god and the power of his belief - things he totally believed were real - and the people were swayed and followed him into the desert. The fact that he did these things isn't really being questioned - just the mode thru which his inspiration came...

people believe what they want to believe. someone wrote about the hebrews being slaves to the egyptian well read and you shall learn. And if you don't want to believe nobody is telling you too. In order to survive we all have to believe in something and if you don't you might as well have no life.

It has to come from within yourself whether you're high or moses was high or the man that walked on water was high who are you to judge or say it never happened???
People as so quick to believe the media without actually being there, there is no such thing as honest reporting anymore but yet people believe in media why not believe that Moses really spoke to G-d? or that the hebrews were slaves? or that there is a war in Iraq or evil in the world. Give it up guys in the end nobody gives a damn and life goes on
