So, how much is your laptop worth? A woman who took her laptop into Best Buy for repair is now suing the company for losing said laptop, which was still covered under an extended warranty thru Best Buy.

It sounds redonkulous...but read on for some details and then opine.

  • $54 million is definitely extreme...but I could see suing for a fairly substantial amount. Let's see, the cost of the computer, the cost of any software and downloads, plus the cost of identity theft monitoring since they lost her personal data...and I'd tack on a dollar amount for lost time/productivity for each day they had the computer past the original time estimate.

  • $54 million does sound a bit excessive, but if that's what it takes for a company like Best Buy to change their policiies on how to handle customers' personal information, then maybe it's not so ridiculous. Identity theft can impact a person for many years and companies need to respect people's private information.

  • $54 million may seem like a lot, but that's the kind of money that will actually hit Best Buy where it hurts. If she sued for a reasonable amount, they would just settle (probably for less than she even deserved), and this would have gotten no media attention. The point of a huge lawsuit like this is to bring attention to bad business practices. This will hurt Best Buy, not just in their budget, but in their business. And if other people who have been treated like this have seen this article, Best Buy may be looking at a class action soon...
