With the combination of a falling dollar and rising gas prices, Americans may finally be seeing the light regarding gas consumption. So while high gas prices are tough on working Americans, could high gas prices be a blessing in disguise to move people to more sustainable life choices and demanding cleaner choices at the pump? Are higher gas prices causing you to alter your current lifestyle?

I think the gas prices will have to soar to 5 or 6 bucks before some people even begin to think about alternatives. People are addicted to their cars. Not to fossil fuels per se, but to the convenience and empowerment of the individual transport unit.
Does anyone share my experience? I used to drive, I loved my car. Then I crashed it and gave up driving all together. And i really dont miss it now. I'm glad i'm not tied to 2000 lbs. of metal. I'm glad i'm not contributing to an industrial complex that is suffocating us and causing us all sorts of respiratory problems. If i still had my car, I would probably be defending the use of fossil fuels, so I'm glad I crashed.
It's an addiction. There are many addictions.
Sex, Substance, Comfort, Convenience. These addictions are keeping us from seeing the bigger picture and doing what's right in the name of sustainability.-

I haven't driven in quite a long time. I even got a job I could walk to, and would only drive in an emergency situation. And I don't miss it either. And I agree, gas prices will have to soar to levels only seen in Europe before Americans start demanding alternate energy sources in their pumps. And it does go beyond just the oil, but as you say the addiction to comfort and convenience that is really holding people back from standing up for what is right for the whole.

To say that Americans are addicted to oil puts the blame squarely where it does NOT belong. Automobiles built much of what this country is all abut. Before autos we had horses. Horses were far more polluting than autos and manure in the streets created horrendous disease problems which today are just a memory. Future technological change will invariably create useable and lasting energy sources many of which need high oil prices to be viable. The end solution to unlimited enrgy is the theorized direct gravity engine; look for it in about 150 years or so.
