Today, millions of LGBT citizens wait following a court hearing to decide the current fate of marriage equality in California. The supreme court is settling a case that started in 2004 when San Fransisco Mayer Newsom ignored state law and started marrying same sex couples. The court has 90 days to make it's decision.

i cannot, for the life of me, understand why any court has the right to deny people marriage....
i mean, LGBT community is FIGHTING to be allowed to get married - how many people fight to get divorces in this country? It's ridiculous...The "sanctity" of marriage would be better served by allowing those people who would truly respect what marriage means (a bond of love and life between two people) to be permitted to take place in it.
I mean, come ON people...we can't keep hiding under the Papal Dogma that says "you can't get married unless you intend to breed" - aren't we a little overpopulated as it is? -
marriage is a religious institution and has no place for debate in the legal institutions. This is a divisive tactic to distract from more important issues, a waste of time and $$.
-
Marriage is a legal institution too. All marriages that come with rights guaranteed by the state should be equal across the board. If your church chooses to be mean to gays, go ahead. But there is a separation of church and state in this country and your religious preference should have no ruling over my life or my rights. The courts, people, and legislatures are slowly realizing this fact. You are on a losing side ablindeye. Sorry.
-
the losing side? I'm sorry maybe you misunderstood my stance. I believe simply that married people gay or not should not have any "more" legal, tax, or land ownership rights than that of a single person...
I completely agree with separation of church and state. I was just stating that marriage is inherently a religious institution...hence having a minister perform in a church or w/e and that as far as my taxes or legal "rights" go being married or gay married should have nothing to do with it. Rights are meant for all humans regardless of age, sex, race, marital status, sexual preference, religion, height, weight, etc.
I understand and support the cause, however, I find it to be just another divisive topic meant to distract from the bigger issues. The mere fact that this issue takes up time in the courts in this day and age is just another sad reminder of how un-evolved we are as humans.
lol i apologize for my vagueness in the first response =P -
Thanks for the clarification. I do take offense, though, to the notion that this is not a big enough issue to focus on. When your life is effected by the inequality of the system, it is a HUGE issue.
-
we are ALL affected by the inequality of the system. Whether or not you're gay should have nothing to do with it in this day and age. The evolution revolution should be for human and social equality not equality solely based on financial status, personal preferences or creature comfort which is how the system works now.
I feel ya bro...but my point is that humans should be well past these types of ego driven divisive social issues and focused on the collective...not just one segment of our disfunctional societies.
...but what do i know
With that said...sadly we obviously are not past these types of issues and even after something close to 50yrs has passed since MLK shared his dream with us, we are still in an uphill struggle for basic human equality.
Unfortunately, I have little hope as long as our masters keep making war toys and poverty levels remain on the rise. -
You make excellent points, however it is very easy for an LGBT person to give concrete examples of rights they are denied. Here is a link outlining some of the 1000 + rights I do not share with you.
Furthermore, this is not a new issue, this is one we've been fighting in the United States since the 1950s. -
The issue is about the rights same sex partnerships receive. By being able to obtain a marriage license and then marry someone of the opposite sex, certain rights are gained. Rights to each other's income, property, and parental custody. But those that choose to enter into a same sex relationship are not given these rights. That is discrimination. And its also unconstitutional which gives everyone religious freedom.

i agree completely....but on another note...
the dumbest thing I ever did was give someone else "right" to MY income because even though I made that decision in the heat of the moment...now i gotta pay for that THE REST OF MY LIFE! DUPE!...my bad...
Well...I guess that would lead me to a new question...
Would gay spouses be equally liable "in the court's eyes" for post-marital support like alimony? Also...is alimony in itself a truly "fair" concept in an educated, sexually liberated world of equality?
and now for overly sarcastic shill'ness remark...
individuals should be proud to forfeit all assets etc etc..to the state upon death. it is their patriotic duty to secure us from terrorists etc etc..lol -
I believe that marriages whether same sex or not should be treated the same. So yes, same sex couples would be required to go through divorce. Equal rights means taking the good along with the bad. for better or for worse, in sickness and in health....
