A malaria study will ask volunteers to be infected with a very deadly strain of malaria, which kills 1 million people annually. The form of malaria the researchers will use is genetically modified so that it will not kill the subjects. Volunteers will feel ill for about 3 days. Would you volunteer to contract Malaria if you were paid $2000.00 - $4000.00?

I think I would actually do this. Getting sick sucks, but since they cure it... I don't know. It does sound risky.
-
Um...no. My health is too precious to me to infect myself for money. I work fairly hard to feed myself things without any toxins, so why waste all the time I spend keeping myself healthy if I was gonna just inject my body with malaria?
-
Are you guys nuts? Malaria stays in your body for life, it can make you ill at any time. How could you put a price on your health? It's the most valuable thing you have.

where do I sign up?

i think i would do this for 4 grand, its only 3 days...but it does sound risky, genetically modified does not mean it cant sometimes mutate back to the killer stran
-
Sure, I believe in my bodies immune system.
Besides it sounds like a good challenge for those lazy T-cells I have. They've been treading good for so long with all the healthy eating, and supplements I take.
Its about time I get some return on my investment.
=)
Show me the sign up sheet. -
a cash return on a pharmaceutical? that is a drop in the bucket compared to what i have paid out to them (in cash!). if this program works then i've got a whole slew of virii and new staph to try as to avoid bankruptcy!
-
Jleemuse, Why avoid Bankruptcy?
I filed for it back in 2006 as a result of the mortgage mess, and my credit hasn't been better.
=) I'd NEVER do it again but the lesson learned was tremendous. Thats the last time I buy a house and start a business at 24! LoL! -
FYI: Malaria sucks. Having it for three days would be horrible. I am living in Sub Saharan Africa. I've had malaria. Intense fevers, headaches, pooping in one's pants...not fun. It's not just "feeling ill" it's really really horrible. But then 4,000 USD is a good chunk of money. Another way is to join the Peace Corps (or VSO if you're from the Commonwealth). Help people. Learn some important skills. Meet new people. Learn a language. And when you're done you get 6,000 USD. Of course, you might still get malaria.

I would do it. not necicarily for the money, tho its an added bonus.
its a Research study, to help those 1 million people annually dieing from the disease.
its genetically altered, and doesnt kill you. tho even if it did happen to 1/100, to save more lives... sign me up.
i remember growing up in Florida as a kid, we used to be tought to fear mosquitos, to bathe in pesticides, and run around in the "fogging trucks" vapor trail. because some chemicals is far better than getting some renagade bug with a deadly uncurable virus...
