This promo campaign of mine has been up on Current TV for a while now but I thought I'd write a little something about it here.
I wanted to create something innovative with the Current identity and give it a strong UK attitude, flavour and voice. I chose to work with a German visuals group called Lichtfaktor, masters of this striking lightwriting motif, to create what I feel are a memorable series of promos for Current.
Although the technique of Light Writing has been around for a long time, visual artists such as Lichtfaktor have brought it back to life with some dazzling projects. In a world where realistic CGI graphics are commonplace, the results achieved with Light Writing look all the more spectacular and unique because they’re created for real, in-camera. The technique is essentially animating with light, using a stills camera set on a long exposure, and a variety of light sources. It’s something anyone can do, but very few people can do well.
I approached Marcel Panne from Lichtfaktor to lend their expertise in order to create this series of branding promos portraying Current TV’s arrival in the UK. We hit it off immediately (both coming partly from a VJ background), and were quickly able to develop the traditional light trails idea with a unique new light stamp technique, which would give us an accurate rendition of the Current logo.
The rest was just a hell of a lot of late night/early morning shooting, then pain staking animation and editing. They supplied the crucial technique and expertise, and also acted as specialist crew on the shoot. They then composited sequences, which I knocked into shape in terms of animation and edited. The music I eventually chose to work with was from the talented artist Maps (a track called ‘Don’t Fear’), lending an appropriate mood and atmosphere the pieces.
I’m very proud to have worked with the talented Lichtfaktor crew to create this unique series of promos for Current.
