Obama takes Mississippi

Barack Obama coasted to victory in Mississippi's Democratic primary Tuesday, latest in a string of racially polarized presidential contests across the Deep South and a final tune-up before next month's high-stakes race with Hillary Rodham Clinton in Pennsylvania.

Obama was winning roughly 90 percent of the black vote but only about one-third of the white vote, extending a pattern that carried him to victory in earlier primaries in South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana.

In the general presidential elections of the past 32 years, Mississippi has voted for the Republican candidate every time.

  • Can't wait to see how this turns out!

  • Even the poorest state in the US can have it's day and it's say. This'll be fun.

  • Another State Hillary thinks doesn't count.

  • I almost never even bother voting in the Kentucky primary, because things are already decided by that point...looks like I may need to secure an absentee ballot this year!

  • Yep it's going to be a long ride smallwood.

dndobson: Seems states don't count where there's a loss, and some do . . . like Florida and Michigan that aren't supposed to count. I wonder if this is a preview of how she'll choose to run the country if elected?
    Chique
  • I think the way she runs her campaign is an indicator of how she will run the country. In her campaign, she expected to win on Super Tuesday and then had no plan for the next 11 states - which she lost. After some firings and rough internal squabbling, her best plan was to go negative in order to win in Ohio and half of Texas. Obama has had a 50 state plan from the beginning and has had only to react to the negative campaign which we had all hoped wouldn't come till the fall.

  • I'm from Hump Back Crooked letter crooked letter and all that jazz(MIssIssippi) and I can tell you neither of the two are worth a damn. Neither has "real" plans on ending the war, Health care, recession and the biggy "CIVIL LIBERITIES". Ya can't give universal health care unless you take it away from the private companies which both benefit from. Oh, and what about NAFTA. Born under the Clinton administration, neither will come out and say they will get rid of it once and for all. And, what about gay rights don't that deserve the "same" rights as the rest of Americans? Just a little somethin somethin from ya girl from one of the poorest states in this here America. Y'all come back now ya here!

  • Well, I don't know that they are totally useless. Presidents do get to pick the people that run all the government agencies, and they will reverse the Bush trend of hiring industry insiders to run the agencies that regulate those industries Sure would be nice if the guy (or gal) in charge of Mine safety, for instance, actually cared about mine workers safety more than mining company profits. It'd be really nice if the head of the EPA thought clean air was a goal and not a just a great slogan for Exxon. And lets not forget that the last two true liberal supreme court justices are about to kick the bucket and need to be replaced with young liberal judges.

So I agree that nothing much will change regarding Healthcare or NAFTA or really anything that the Legislature is responsible for, but there are plenty of things Presidents actually do that really do matter and so the choice really does matter - and in that regard both are a much better choice than John Sidney McCain III aka "Crazy Bush."
    dndobson
  • I agree. They both are better than Bush.
    keeesha
  • Keeesha, your comments are right on. I had the dilemma of deciding between the two in the Democratic primary and I ended up joining the Green Party and voting for Ralph Nader. See votenader.org.

  • GONader! Biggest ego of the whole group!

  • When it comes to water under the bridge and plans such as NAFTA that may have looked good on paper, but in their implementation, someone or many someones have figured out ways to beat the system or take major advantage of it, or both...we hardworking Americans have suffered for it...so we need some safeguards in the future with better plans...I wouldn't sell Barack short just yet...he seems to have good intuition. You have to give him credit for keeping his cool and being more the voice of reason. All the Civil Liberties stuff will have to be rehashed now that Dub has drug it through the mud...In essence, the whole thing will have to be overhauled...Someone has a very big tough job ahead and since the shrub and crew have siphoned off all of Joe Taxpayers funds into the next generation...well you get my point....

dndobson, you make some good points...a chain is only as strong as its weakest link...thing is Dubyu's whole chain is well...you better flush it...been stinkin' a long time...

If you do your research and follow the money trail, you'll probably find that Nader is funded primarily by the Repubs just to siphon votes from the Dems...sorry you threw that vote away...nobody's buying Nader's horse hockey this time around...old school news...

Let's focus on the future while we dwell on the past...

  • Take the whole state Obama. You are young enough that we can raise you right.
  • why is everything about black and white her in this shit land of america I hope they blow this place to pieces
    LethanoWun
  • Hey, I have children here in this land, so please, lets fix the fucking mess but not blow it up, ok?
    dndobson
  • The question now is what's Obama's move with Pennsylvania? I think he should take two weeks and go do some international travel instead of entering the Clinton spin zone. That way he will appear worldly and presidential and she will look like a hobo begging for change in Philadelphia.

  • 44 years ago 3 college students were killed in Mississippi by the KKK for registering black voters. Today, all men and women can vote in Mississippi whatever their race. And should the voters of MIssissippi wish it, they can vote for a black man and they can win. Whoever you choose as your candidate, this is an historic day.

Rest in peace Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner. Rest easy.

    singin'

    He was my brother
    Five years older than I
    He was my brother
Twenty-three years old the day he died

    Freedom writer
They cursed my brother to his face
    Go home outsider
This town's gonna be your buryin' place

He was singin' on his knees
    An angry mob trailed along
    They shot my brother dead
Because he hated what was wrong

    He was my brother
Tears can't bring him back to me
    He was my brother
And he died so his brothers could be free
He died so his brothers could be free

  • Again, are people voting for Obama in these states just because he is black? Why is everything about race and gender and why is that alone only seen as change? You have to have policy to back it up, and since so many claim his policy is so similiar to Clinton's how does it serve us as Americans to have people voting for him just because of his race? It also seems not many even give a damn about his policy and I think that is a mistake. Frankly, I don't think any of them are worth my vote. If people think any of them really care about their problems they are very naive. It's only about 'winning.' Ego, ego, ego. Hell, maybe I will still vote for Edwards in November. Martin Luther King's son endorsed him, more than likely because he knew he was at least sincere about addressing and ending poverty in this country and he was the only one willing to stand up to the nuclear lobby. You never really hear anything sincere about that from Obama or Clinton. It's just, give me another win to brag about. Now, had the Democratic party actually given us a CHOICE instead of allowing all of the ones who really addressed issues to be pushed out by the corporate media, then perhaps I would have a reason to vote in November besides just being guilted to pick either the black man or the woman. I hope the Democratic party is happy with itself that it has caused such division and guilt. All I know is, I am reregistering as an Independent. I am sick of being manipulated by a party apparatus just as cunning as the other side.

  • No, people aren't voting for Obama because he's black or in spite of it. They are voting for him because they believe he has good intentions. That's why we always vote for people. We hope that he will do his very best to fix the multitude of problems facing this country. We hope he will surround himself with experts to help him do this. He is new to Washington and won't be bringing someone else's staff back in to do what has been tried before. We believe he will listen to the people. We are tired of the tough shit if you don't like it attitude of the last twenty years. He was not my first choice, he is the best of what is available. I'm going to support him because I want things fixed and I want the country to grow and prosper. I don't see black or white, I see hope.
  • I also believe that the vote isn't becausee he's black, but because he stands for hope...and it's not about race or gender. They just happen to be the choices we have now, and it is a historical moment in America. So what if the blacks are proud of some one of color making it so far up the ladder. It only makes his job that much harder, because there are still a lot of prejudiced people in the world and he will have to fight that backlash as long as he lasts. Of course, if he did some travel, say to China, then he could help out George Clooney and Steven Spielberg with the problems in Sudan. Those two are doing a far better job of foreign policy than anyone on The Hill...

Yes, if we had had Gore as it should have been, then we wouldn't be in this mess...so maybe we see this administrations failures as an example of how it shouldn't be done and never ever let it happen again! I would, personally like to see John Edwards as the Vice Presidental candidate under Obama. That would even strengthen the ticket. Then he could take over after Barack...then we would be proud once again to sing...Hail to the Chiefs...

  • Ditto MM. Hope for this country is something we can't extinguish or we're really in trouble.
    Chique
  • Mississippi is a great state! We vacation there and love the people. I can see where Obama would give the hope to many that believe in his message.
    ITRY2BGREEN
  • We need some young blood up on the Hill...not the Over the Hill Gang...No pun intended...
    PlatoTacius
  • Screw young. We need someone who is going to get this country back on track and keep it that way. I don't mean to sound like a old foggy (26) but I don't think Barack or Hilliary are right for the job. In my opnion I think people are comparing Barack to John F. Kennedy and I think that is costly. Oh, and John Mccain sucks too.
    keeesha
  • I guess you're not voting then?
    Chique
  • Please... let's be realistic here. How many people who voted in Mississippi could even name ONE policy of Obama's? Or for that matter, Clinton's. Hope? By doing what? Speaking pretty?
    JanforGore
  • keeesha, So none of the candidates are fit for the job. What do you suggest? Barack Obama doesn't need to be compared to anyone, he will make his own mark.
  • Obama will impact the world second he steps foot in White House.
    spingchicken
  • BHO isn't as catchy as JFK, we will get used to it.
  • Good Job Obama. I can already see Tracy Flick,er, I mean Hillary stamping her foot in frsutration.

"Don't these idiots understand how much I want this!?! I am the wife of Bill Clinton! Obama isn't married to ANYONE famous. I don't get it!"

Um, Hillary? Wanting something really bad doesn't automatically mean you're entitled to it.

  • There should be an SNL spoof of Hillary on American Idol.

I can sooooo see her has one of those contestants that can't really sing, but has grown up being told she's "really good" -- and then get's enraged and indignant when the judges explain that shes, um, not very good.

Ryan Secrest: "So what happened in the audience Hillary?"

Hillary: "<expletive>! Those little <expletive> <expletive> <expletive> don't realize how awesome I am! <expletive>! They can all kiss my <expletive>!

    Secrest: Security!

    Hillary: "I'm not going anywhere! Don't <expletive> touch me! I'm a star! I'm a star you little <expletive>!"

  • I turned on the radio last night and heard Hillary pointing out the fact that Obama voted for and backs the Republican energy policy. Perhaps Hillary is finally catching on. Hillary should have won Missouri. Obama won Missouri because he won in St. Louis, corporate home of Ameren Utility company. Ameren owns the Calloway nuke plant in Missouri and the Clinton nuke plant in Illinois. Ameren and Exelon want to build a new nuke plant at Clinton. So does Barack Obama, who is the new Public Relations man for the nuclear industry. That's how he is winning everywhere. All the utility people are voting for him. That's really what this election is all about. Global warming is real. Are we going to proceed with an energy policy of coal and nuclear (i.e. asthma and cancer) or solar and wind (sustainable life, sustainable breath)? Obama is for coal and nuclear, the industries of Illinois. Hillary is still trying to figure out how to win. But between the two, Hillary is more left than Obama on most every issue, that's why the Republicans are happy to vote for Obama but can't stand Hillary. I'd rather see a female mother in the office of the presidency. Germany's leader is a female. Even though she is considered a conservative, she just shut down all the nuke plants in Germany because they are dangerous and health threats. Germany now leads all other countries in solar power usage. That's what needs to happen in America. Illinois needs to change from a nuclear/coal industry to a solar/wind industry. Barack's idea of change is allowing the nuke industry to build more nuke plants, something that has not happened in this country for many years. I'd prefer HRC to BHO but Ralph Nader has superior intelligence, understanding and eliminates all the corruption so I'll stick with him.

  • Wait....Hillary is to the LEFT of Obama?

Hillary has long be accused of being a closet Republican because she is such a war hawk and so corporate friendly. True, she has taken a mor ehardline stance on nuclear energy in her campaign but:

    1) Is that just talk that she has no intention of ever following through on? (Like Bush was for a more "humble" foreign policy when he first started campaigning in 2000)

    2) Maybe telling the nuclear power people what they wanna hear now in order to get elected is just a strategy Obama is employing. Again, he could be saying one thing (to avoid firing up the nuclear people who could spend millions attacking him with 527's) with the intention of doing another once in office. Strategically it seems like a wise strategy. The coal, gas and nuclear people have collectively billions of dollars at their disposal that they could funnel into attack ads, robo-calls, etc if they see Obama as a threat. He's already got an uphill battle fighting the entrenched and connected Clinton Political Machine -- it might be wise to simply let Hillary be the target of the coal barons and avoid a fight with them in the primaries and general election.

  • Les Claypool-"I'm not one to tell people what to do-vote Obama-but....(something about how the ferris wheel made him happy)..."-thursday night at langerado. And I thought I couldn't love Claypool anymore than I already did. =) Oh and janforgore-way to cut people down and make them seem racist for liking obama, I happen to have very carefully looked over all the candidates voting records and their stances on all issues and found that not only do I like Obama as a person and find him very trustworthy, but I agree with him on all but one large and one fairly small issue. but hey, I must like him just cause he's black right? what about the ignorant people that couldn't tell you even one of his stances, but know that they dislike him because his name sounds like Osama? morons.

  • I heard this lady from Illinois call in to Air America to say the progressive Democrats of Illinois do not like Obama and that Hillary is more left than him, confirming what I had already observed as I also live in Illinois. This is that lady's website. Even with the health care issue, Hillary is closer to universal healthcare and he is just supporting the insurance companies. I absolutely can't stand him because of the nuclear issue. Anyone who wants to produce more nuclear waste is not in tune with the universe and certainly not a responsible person. That includes all the "intelligent" people who are supporting him and aren't seeing through his vague rhetoric to the real message of new nukes. The caucuses are being held by military and utility people, that's why he is winning. They have put out the message that he is left and gotten a bunch of young people to "follow the momentum": Change and Hope. I hope for change too but I prefer it to be life sustaining.

  • Speaking of talking pretty, as I recall, one of the biggest issues Bush kept reverberating in his 2000 campaign was more accountability...we see how that turned out. I'm stiiiillll trying to get the knife out of my back...

futuregen, I think you'd better check your facts. You seem to be a bit confused. For one, the Repubs have funded Hilary more heavily, because they want her to get the nomination...if she does, they believe that they can put the screws to her and turn her into mince meat, giving McCain the sure win. If not, she is way more aligned with their Roll-Back policies than Barack. I believe they know they can't beat him. The only way for them would be to eliminate him...then we're getting back to this elitist group's major propensity for insidious transgression...how sad that would be...

You make some very good points about the need for the development of alternative energy, though, but Nader isn't going to get it for us...we'd have had a much better chance with Dennis C or John E for that. So, get your head out of the sand and retune your selective hearing...sounds like you've been listening to too much very weak right wing irresponsible rhetoric. Barack has no intention of turning the Nuke people loose on us...he is a very clever strategist, who will, more likely, strengthen the regulations on clean air and CO2 emissions back to where they were before Bush rolled them back to the Stone Age. I am for solar, wind, thermodynamic, hydroelectric or any other purely clean energy source, but until we get there (it won't happen overnight) there are ways of burning fossil fuels way more cleanly except the EPA is in the pocket of the Energy companies and the Bushies won't enforce the regulations...the list goes on and on... so, the utilities companies are buying people off, but it's not Barack. He's not taking big money from Big Interests. He gets the majority of his money from $5 to $25 donors, obviously many of us...We The People...so give credit where credit is due. The guy has good intuition and is a good strategist.

I admire Hilary and I believe she is a very tough competitor, but I believe Barack is better...and will do more to surround himself with brilliant people who will strive to staighten this country out quicker...

The whole world is waiting for us to get back to the responsible country we used to be...

  • We had a Representative in Maine who pushed through a bill that required the nuke plant to pay for an 800 number, updated daily with releases and accidents, that the citizens could call to inform themselves. It also required Geiger counters to be placed on poles around the plant with alarms in the citizens houses so that if the releases did not become airborne and came back down toward the ground and the people's houses (which happened often), they had a chance to react appropriately. That's what we need here in Illinois. In Illinois, the newspapers still pretend that there aren't any emissions. Several of the plants are leaking into the groundwater and they all leak during normal operations, dumping radioactivity into our air and water. The waste will leak forever (they have to vent the containers and the dumps to release the radioactive gases as the waste decays or the container will explode). The Illinois river not only has drugs in it, but also alot of radioactivity. That's our drinking water source. We have 14 nuke plants, 11 operating and Obama wants to build more. Illinois in the most nuclear state in America. Perhaps Barack can help clean up Illinois if he becomes President because he sure hasn't done it as senator. Refer to NEIS.org.
