Exploring race, class, gender, and power in a small Mississippi Delta town through the lens of the 2008 presidential primaries.

Crossin' All The Boundaries is a journey through Clarksdale, a small town on the Mississippi Delta. Three weeks before the 2008 Mississippi Presidential Primaries, the filmmakers, Rebecca Parrish and Brooke Bassin, travel across boundaries of race and class in this small Southern town to find out how people relate to the candidates and to national politics as a whole.

In this intimate portrait of a political process that can often seem distant and abstract, the filmmakers meet people where they're at: on the street, at work, in their living rooms, at church, and even golfing at the country club. The film ultimately goes beyond the elections to provide a window into the operations of race, class, gender, and power.

  • It's good to see some coverage of Mississippi. Some great shots in this video.

  • You did a better job of covering the MS primary than either of the news organization. You have an interesting mix of people. I think that this is really great. I might consider having my students view this for a course. Great job.

  • Definitely an interesting collection of viewpoints. I love the younger take as seeing Obama and Clinton doing "the same thing" simply because they're the only two non white males! Very nicely done.

  • Great job. A very telling picture of not only race opinions, but how cultural differences influence the decisions they make.

  • this is a fascinating look at the perceptions of the presidential race among Mississippians that touches numerous perspectives. the camera angles give the viewer a startlingly true picture of their thoughts. i was laughing one second and shocked the next--the directors did a fantastic job.

  • Wow- what a wonderfully powerful panoramic view into the lives and thoughts of a cultural unique part of the country. The results of the Mississippi primary were certainly predicted by this astute, well documented and non-biased video which delved gently into the complexities of this year's extraordinary election.
    Bravo!

  • Really enjoyed the snapshot of the old South, circa 2008, Presidential Primary. Old prejudices, new hope, "change is in the air," and it is still hard to run for public office when your name is "Hucklesomething!"
Bec and Brooke did a great job of capturing the diverse opinions and the enthusiasm of the Obama supporters.

  • I FOUND THE PIECE VERY INTERESTING AND NOT AT ALL SURPRISING. AS WELL, I FEEL THAT VARIOIUS OPINIONS EXPRESSED ARE MUCH OF THE VIEWS OF MANY AMERICANS ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES. WHICH SIMPLY MEANS THAT AMERICA IS AS COMPLEXED AS THE ELECTION PROCESS. THE ELECTION PROCESS WILL REVEAL THAT THE PROCESS WAS DEVELOPED HISTORICALLY FROM A MANIPULATED AND UNJUST PERSPECTIVE. NOW, IN 2008, THE ELECTION PROCESS IN THE UNITED STATES IS BEING PLACED ON "BLAST"!!! MEANING THAT THE PROCESS CONTINUES TO SHOW THAT IT IS WITHOUT ERROR. AS IS THE CASE, MONEY DRIVES EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ELECTION PROCESS. MILLIONS/BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SPENT TO ELECT A PRESIDENT WHO DOES WHAT? THE POINT IS, DOES THE "ELECTED" PRESIDENT DO THE RIGHT THING???? AS WELL ARE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OF A JUST MIND TO ELECT A PRESIDENT FOR HIS/HER ABILITIES. AND, ARE THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES AFTER THE PRESIDENTIAL SEAT TO BE AN ASSET TO AMERICAN AND THE WORLD????

  • I appreciated your unbiased approach. The questions were thought provoking. There was respect shown for each individual interviewed and there were no "gotcha" questions. You therefore received honest, insightful and sincere responses. The main stream media should take a lesson from this approach. This should be required viewing for all reporters, commentators and pundits!

  • This video does an excellent job of portraying the opinions of this town rather than asking and pushing for biased answers. Its nice to see in the context of today's media establishment.

  • This piece gives wonderful insight into the southern perspective from all angles. It was very interesting to see both extremes. Great job!!!

  • Being on the west coast, this piece gives a valuable insight into the varied viewpoints in MS and it also refreshingly unbiased and straightforward. Nice work.

  • Excellent work. As someone who has tried to conduct countless interviews with small town people, I commend your success at persuading such a wide variety of people to participate because it is no easy task.

It would be interesting if you had one of those subtitle views of what they are really thinking, like the terrace scene in Annie Hall, because you suspect that from the first woman who works as a cook in a restaurant to the golfer at the country club, that you can read between the lines and figure out what they would say if you shot them up with sodium pentothal.

I especially love the people who plan to vote for Huckabee even though they can't remember his name.
