Muslim Snowboarders strive to maintain a balance between American youth culture and their Islamic identity. This is an pod is an important observation of what growing up in America is like for a group who finds themselves both inside and outside of the dominant culture.

  • I thinks it's interesting and wonderful, what individuals all over the world from different countries and cultures find spiritual to them.

I find that many outdoor activities bring me closer to my own spiritual being and closer to mother earth, where we all come from and where we all live and call home! I am a snowboarder of 18 years and I find it more of a spiritual sport as many feel surfing is to them. It's not about how good you are or how competitive it can be, but it's all about how it makes YOU feel and what it does for your mind, body and spirit.

This is a great piece and I love that these individuals take pride in doing something they enjoy and have found a way to express who they are and where they come from while participating in it.

  • I love that this shows people who are considered to be the "other" by some taking part in a mainstream sport...one that could even be called a subculture on its own.

  • This is an extremely poignant piece of work! It not only creates a bridge between two seemingly incongruous cultures (aka boarders and Muslim youth) but it does so with class and professional ease, making it digestible for people of all ages. The media has infiltrated us with stories that highlight how different one society is from another; it is really refreshing to see something that illustrates our commonalities.

  • This is a great GREAT pod. It represents a marriage of cultures in a sport that is very popular worldwide. It is an exemplary expose of how two extraordinarily different cultures (Islam and Capitalism) can meet, greet, and play together WITHOUT strapping bombs to their chests or hold "Food for Oil". It shows what is POSSIBLE in humanity and should be continually exposed to the public at large...great job.

  • Wow!.....Muslims.....snowboarding.....how profound.
And the part about the prophet having his heart washed out with ice.....that makes sense. But really, The only people that think of Muslims as "other" are the Muslims themselves. Thats why a co-ed snowboarding trip is such a big deal, especially to the poor ignorant stifled women. And may I point out that the majority of people of other religious persuasions are "ponderers" as well and just as awestruck by the beauty of Gods creation but don't feel it such a unique happening, getting together to enjoy the outdoors, or feel it necessary to make a public showing of communication with their God.
I think a pod about Muslim co-eds getting closer to Allah while surfing liquid H20 would be alot more interesting, if you know what I mean. ;-)

  • This is incredibly interesting, very well put together pod! I love the music! I like what was said about snowboarding as "reflection." Most people wouldn't put that kind of activity side-by-side with prayer or spiritual activity!
