Police arrested a second suspect early Thursday in connection with the death of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson.

Heavily armed officers surrounded a house in Durham, North Carolina, shortly after midnight Thursday after receiving an anonymous tip that Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr. was inside, police said.

Lovette, 17, surrendered without incident after four hours, Durham police Lt. Robert McLaughlin Jr. said.

He is the second man police were looking for in their investigation into Carson's death. Authorities have charged a suspect in the slaying of University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson with first-degree murder.

Original Story --

Documents filed Wednesday named the defendant as 21-year-old Demario James Atwater, of Durham. Chapel Hill police and District Attorney Jim Woodall gathered Wednesday afternoon in an Orange County courtroom for Atwater's first appearance.

Police had released several photos of a man who they say attempted to use Carson's ATM card at a bank and a convenience store. The photographs, taken by an ATM camera in the Chapel Hill area, show a young man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a vintage Houston Astros baseball cap.

  • UNC students react to Eve Carson's death.

I'm a Dukie, but my heart goes out to the entire UNC community - ours is a rivalry characterized by the utmost respect between both schools.

  • he should be tortured to death

  • I'm extremely interested to see what the killer has to say about his motives. I wonder if it was just for money as the ATM photo might suggest or was there perhaps more to it?

  • I too am interested in this young killer. What the news stories never seem to tell us is why this happened. What motivates the criminal? Only when we understand the causes behind these crimes can take action to stop it. I don't mean taking action to ensure there are more guards and more police and more guns in the hands of civilians. I mean determining Demario James Atwater's route in life and why it led him to this. I suspect it has to do with time spent in prison, his experience in the justice system, and his childhood...but what do I know? I wish the media would address these issues instead of just the tragic end of them.
My heart goes out to all who knew and loved Eve Carson.

  • He should be forced to watch video of the victims mother crying for the rest of his life.

  • damn this is making me sick, really disgusting. as a black dude this upsets me even more. I hope he gets what he deserves, he's a coward.

  • no judicial trial yet and you all talk like this person is already guilty. why? because he's black? using a dead person's atm card doesn't mean you're the murderer. obviously, he's connected to it, but let's not hang someone before we know for sure...for the family's sake.

  • thank you pressrecord. innocent until proven guilty....

  • My condolences to the survivors and friends of this young woman. You wonder how it might have turned out had she had a concealed carry.
    KenC
  • Say What? If she had a concealed carry, then another gun would be in the hands of a criminal. Get real.
    derk
  • Thank you derk. Further examples of your tact, diplomacy and excellent reasoning skills are eagerly awaited!
    KenC
  • KenC you can turn it the other way around and say if NOBODY were allowed to carry guns and gunshops don't exist, then NO ONE would get shot.

Even if she carried a weapon, its very likely she would be the the first to get shot anyway as she didn't see what was coming and was completely unprepared....

I wouldn't feel safe if I were to live in a country where ordinary people have access to guns, this news is one of many examples. You have to consider the fact that there are both GOOD and BAD people among us but you can never tell whether they are good or bad. This guy who shot her is obviousy a thug but even good people DO "snap" sometimes and by having a gun around you only makes it easier to kill someone.

But I guess you have to be born and raised American to understand the concept of carrying a gun for your own your protection. We can have it your way and force all the college kids to carry guns "for their own protection" but remember that not everyone is as responsible as you, so the consequence would be pretty predictable. Think Columbine and Virginia Tech etc.
    SANMedia
  • SanMedia, Columbine, Virginia Tech and others may never had happened had they not been "gun free zones." The shooters may have had second thoughts before pulling those stunts in places where someone might be shooting back at them.

The last I knew we weren't asking anyone to come here that doesn't want to so I believe you're safe on that... ;-) Actually it seems the other way around, where we find ourselves trying to keep people out.

Best luck to you in your gun-free, violence-free home country.

  • Unfortunately there is a low element of men that hate pretty women who wouldn't normally go out with them. So therefore they get off on raping and killing them. That is the explaination here for those who are so confused.
Look at some hard hardcore rap. These guys think it's cool to have a white chic with a gun in her mouth on their album covers.
Of course a hard past led up to this. But at this point it's like too late- and especially if they're smoking crack. Forget it. They're committed to this lifestyle until they die or go to prison. Unfortunately that is their goal in life.
    cdltnla
  • what in the world are you talking about? what rap album cover has a white girl with a gun in her mouth? and if so that's a decision was made by a record label executive who's white. damn I wish dumb people like you would just stop using the internet.

I don't think this shit is so goddamn funny you punk ass fool trying to slam on me when this shit is out there.
It's not a goddamn joke and if you think that it is you're the one who's stupid.
And there are plenty of independent rap artists that make their own choices with what they put on their covers.
If you think rap music isn't one of the biggest if not THE biggest problem in this country well then I guess everyone can see where your morals are at.
When someone rolls up along the side of me with that crappy pathetic shit blaring for the whole world to hear and my kids are in the car listening to some loser talking about PUSSY AND GUNS AND FUCK THA POLICE it makes me sick. What's such a wonder why this is a bad influence on all people??? I'm not talking about milder rap- you fools.

As for the bewildered woman who answered my first post:
When I run across the guy's album again (and I will) I'll make sure to send the shocked and amazed and doubtful people here a link!!
    And I didn't say,

"people that smoke crack want white girls that too pretty to date them and thus they rape and kill them while the girl has a gun in her mouth."
You just mixed my sentences together to make it what you wanted! But that is so very typical!!!!

    I said,
"Unfortunately there is a low element of men that hate pretty women who wouldn't normally go out with them. So therefore they get off on raping and killing them."
    and
"Look at some hard hardcore rap. These guys think it's cool to have a white chic with a gun in her mouth on their album covers."

Just look back at my post Ok?

WHHHHAAT ???? A RAP ARTIST WITH A GUN IN A CHIC'S MOUTH FOR AN ALBUM COVER???
NOOOOO WAY!! They'd NEVER do something like THAT!!
    cdltnla
  • I am fucking laughing at the replies to my post and what is the best is that the chic who replied under it makes it like people who smoke crack can't go out of their minds and do crazy shit!!
    Now that's a first!
    cdltnla
  • First of all, dont get so offended. When you start to insult people, it diminishes your argument and you lose your credibility.
Second of all, excuse me for taking your comments out of context and not literally using the words/ phrases in the order in which you presented them.
Third, I'd like to thank you for calling me chic which actually means smart and elegant.
Fourth, what kind of a source is that? I cant figure out if it's trashy joke or a serious blog. Either way, its way too far from a credible source to even acknowledge.

I never said that people who smoke crack cant go out of their minds and do crazy shit. I simply asked you to explain further your claims made in your post. No where in the linked CNN article does it state that the murders were on crack or even allude to the possibility of that. And CNN is a credible source.

I dont think any of your statements from your original post can be substantiated based either article. I mean, if you have some prior personal relationship with the suspects than that would of course defeat my arguments. Quite simply, it was a racist, generalization not based on any facts. The post assumes that the black men killed a white woman because she was pretty and would not date them. You further assume they listen to hardcore rap music and they lived a hard life. (and that is much more in the context of the way you put it but by all means, argue that I am still misconstruing it) I am NOT justifiying what they did because it's flat out wrong. But I disagree with your reasoning behind it because it simply not based on verifiable information.

Maybe they are on crack and spent way too much time listening to 50 cent or some other form of crap music some people choice to support...we do not know that. And I am not going to even acknowledge that website you linked to that suggested she was doing drugs as well. Maybe she was..but that is in no way a legitimate source to cite.

So dont assume those are the problems that caused this..that was my point.

  • Look, it pisses me off and I am so sure alot of people feel the same way.
I am sick and tired of mean and controlling gangstas and overall mean men I hear about.
If we keep buckling to this intimidation and supporting hate music, what's the country going to be like in 15 years?

Guys who look like that , generally have a gangsta mentality and bottom line- rap music has EVERYTHING to do with that and everyone knows it. It fuels boys like this to hate and kill to gain respect. Since their families aren't there most of the time, that is the way they cope with their pain that's buried very deep within.

I looked like a punk when I was listening to Industrial music like Ministry, go figure!
Wallowing in my sorrows and wanting the world to notice me, but show them I didn't care about their opinions of me. That's why I notice how a person looks- often your assumption is correct.
People looked at me and probably thought- drug addict. Well, I wasn't so bad, but yeah, I was doing drugs.
I wish people would stop being so offended by the mere acknowledgement of the profile they make for themselves. I never did.

That to me says major insecurity and inferiority complex. Which is only the families fault, especially the mothers. Because that is their duty to their boys to teach them how to feel confident and not have to prove something to the world.

    As for music-
Artists who portray women as complete pieces of shit - holes to fuck and abuse, that's what comes to mind initially. This is why I believe alot of rap music molds young peoples minds to have no self respect for real and no respect at all for women. I think people need to recognize this and stop feeding the beast.
    Have you ever heard Plies?
    Yeah, he's great.
You can probably find some great videos on MySpace.
    Check him out!

As for the legitimacy of that site-
Why is it so hard to believe that there are people that are that angry to compile such hateful articles?
Would you believe it if it were a KKK website? Probably so.

This is more than anything a crime against a woman by two men who were angry at women- in this case she was white.
The coverage has been made clear that these men believed she wanted this. How freaky??? What could make someone think that?
    Maybe crack... maybe not-
    I don't know.

Anyway, whatever. However I offended you personally I apologize.
But if that's a pic of you in your car-
let's see if I were to guess. You might be a working professional????
You just struck me of that style of individual upon a glance.
    By my criticism of rap,
is it a wonder that I am a middle aged mother???!!

Last I HAVE to say this.
What gets me about alot of angry sounding rap music made by black men is that it is violent and often hating whitey.
You know it- I know it- we all know it.
Often that pain and anger that comes from the knowledge of the oppression once imposed upon black people.
Now, I'd have to say most black people love and honor Martin Luther King right?
How can someone claim to take those 2 stances simultaneously, when MLK solely represented peace amongst all?

As for that stupid album cover I mentioned, it's a pretty popular white gangsta rap artist ironically.
It's all the same to me.
