A cut-down of the feature length documentary film, "Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars" tells the remarkable and ultimately life-affirming story of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, a group of six Sierra Leonean musicians who come together to form a band while living as refugees in the Republic of Guinea.

  • If you dig the music in this pod as much as I did...here's the group's website, where you can buy it (better here, where they get all the profits than through a 3rd party retailer)!

  • Great pod! It is beautifully shot, and your central characters are not only informative, but engaging to watch. The music and info cards used really helped tie the story together and set the mood of the piece throughout. Thanks for taking on this topic, and helping educate those of us who are stuck on North American soil. I was aware of the conflict in Sierra Leone, but not in a formal way. Your pod helped tell the tragic tale of the combat, and gave it a human face to show the real repercussions and devastation of war. But the pod also showed that the human will carries on, and from the devastation can come great beauty and triumph. I can’t wait to see the longer doc!

  • Appreciate the comments so far!!!
Zach Niles and myself (Banker White) were the filmmakers for the documentary. I am happy to report that there have been many positive developments in the band member's lives since the film was completed. We invite you learn more by contacting us or visiting our website:

It has been a life changing experience to meet the extraordinary individuals in the band and watch them grow from talented refugee musicians to real ambassadors of peace as they tour the world spreading their healing message through music!!!

  • There have been several truly moving pods on this wonderful channel, but this one...hey. I cried almost all the way thru it. We in America are such a lucky society. So much of the world suffers. Thanks to Current for bringing these stories to us!

  • This one moved me as well. I can't stop thinking about how joyous and infectious their music is and how uplifting their sound must have been for the fellow displaced refugees. Thanks.

  • I thought this was really good.

I served in the area during the beginning of the civil war. They had already bombed the embassy and we were the last Americans in the area.

We had two CH 53 ECHO helicopters on a concrete pad in a village that we would fly and find refugees and pull them out of hot areas...

The area was filled with poverty and heartache...which was a stark contrast to the beauty of the land...

The one thing I noticed was that there was no trash in the area...everything was used until it could not be used any longer.

Everything had value...which could be bad and good. Good because nothing went to waist...bad because everything was for sale...including people.

We had gangs of kids that we hired for protection that would watch over us...but I think we were paying them for protection from them...

When we weren't working we were surfing and hanging out on the beach...it was a strange contrast...surrounded by death, poverty, disease...and yet sitting on a beach drinking green star beef...

I will buy there album and check it out...good stuff
