"China's crackdown on demonstrators in Tibet has prompted international condemnation and a call for a boycott of this summer's Beijing Olympics. Protesters took to the streets to voice their anger in cities around the world. Some of the protests became violent and in India, Australia and China, police moved in to disperse crowds."

Complex issue - depends on whether the Olympics should be solely about sports (and thus, in spirit of the games) or should the IOC be a political body (and thus, not just about sports, but also politics). There are advantages and disadvantages to both and so I understand the IOC reluctance to exercise political powers. While a protest by the viewers would be great in dampening the lucrative expected profits of the Olympics, I'm uncertain as to whether athletes should protest the sporting event. Basically, an overall protest by everyone might not be the best for the Olympics, but a protest by viewers would illustrate to China that it will not profit from such an event.

That is lame... How many things will you Boycott?
1. What about the American violence against Iraqis and Afghanis?
2. What about Israeli violence against Palestinians?
3. What about Indian Violence against Kashmiris?
The world is full of blood stains...... Can you boycott USA, Israel and India?
If you have the guts then boycott against everyone or SHUT up because you are tooo weak and you're boycotting in your own convenience.-

China is a mighty country and its international power (in many aspects) is growing by the day, and its ambitions are growing too. People on the diplomatic and political fronts are scared of annoying China because of their economic ties. Boycotting the games I think is actually a very good way of getting round all this as it would be up to the participants not the governments to annoy China.
We need to let China know that, yes it may soon become a serious superpowers, but they can not get away with what they want.
Boycotting the Olympics would be such an embarrasment for China that it would shock its population into actually recognizing the horrors they have put onto Tibetans for ... 50 ... years! -
democracy will be the only way to bring down their carbon emissions fast

Have athletes carry Tibetan flags during the parade. Boycott the opening ceremonies! Maybe athletes can wear saffron colored arm bands (in spandex to avoid friction).
