  • They have public housing that people actually want to return to and that could be opened, and yet the housing is being torn down.

Meanwhile families remain in trailers that are toxic...

The priorities of our government in response to Katrina make me ashamed.

  • Out of 3000 people that lived in that slum only about 10 old women came back to protest the demolition. That's because no one in their right mind would want to move back those projects. You get a 5000$ check, a temporary home to live in, displacement from one of the most dangerous drug and violence infested enviorments in the country, and you want to blow your chance at finally getting on your feet to move back to the projects in New Orleans. I just can't see any one wanting to do that. Get your life together first or you should have used your fema money to rent a appartment in new orleans if you really want to come back. Don't pass up the chance to be able to take care of a family and be tax paying citizen of society.

  • Great pod! I'm glad to see the other side of this topic. This has to do with more than the city trying to demolish unsafe housing. It has to do with peoples lives and their own struggle to cope with this disaster.

  • Tori . . . have you ever been to New Orleans or seen the Lafitte Project? There is absolutely no rational reason to try to rehabilitate that property or to bring people back to it. If they did, it wouldn't be long before activists would be down there decrying the deplorable conditions of those who returned. I understand and sympathize with the hurt and anger, but the solutions proposed by activists are not solutions at all.

  • They need to restore areas for flood protection otherwise we are just going to be in this mess again if/when another storm hits.

As tragic as the Katrina situation is, people need to be smart about decisions that are made and plan for the future before something like this happens again. Scientist figured these tragedies would happen, but it was too late to save New Orleans. Unfortunately people are suffering now because we tried to quick fix the situation without considering the long term effects.

I agree that there does need to be a better way to provide housing for these people until safer housing is developed, but I agree with not rebuilding those houses because in the end it will serve a better purpose for New Orleans future.
