Everyone knows the Easter bunny. But when you stop and think about it, why do we celebrate this religious holiday with a kid's toy? I did a little investigating down the rabbit hole. The academics can tell you the origins of Easter bunnies, what about how they end up? Exclusive to Current!

What's up with the Easter Bunny?

  • "We're supposed to get a new shipment of bunnies next week." haha

They say Valentine's Day is the Hallmark holiday, well I guess Easter is a Petco holiday.

  • I love the "slave to love" volunteer! (Too bad the footage is necessarily dark inside the shelter.)

  • It's so sad that people just dump their pets when they get sick of them. And with the US being in such tough economic times, I can't help but think that there'll be even more sad cases with bunnies and maybe other pets too. $150/month + vet bills is a lot for most families...

  • I recently looked up the whole egg-bunny-Easter connection on Wikipedia... so I thought this was interesting and fun.

Did see some strange edits and jump cuts (an arch for a second and then back to the folklore guy for one, and the back of the shelter-woman's head for another).

And I didn't like the folklore guy's rather snide remarks about a bunny not being a pet.... I had a colleague at work a few years ago that loved and OBSESSED about his pet bunny (pics all over his cube) and would constantly tell us how wonderful and clean and smart the bunny was...

NOT that I want one (baaaad memories of pet bunnies from my formative years).

Now --- what is the next holiday coming up? Arbor day? Grandparents day?

  • this holiday is pointless now apart from the people who make money out of it. and kids get 2 weeks worth of a holiday. but what was the true meaning of this. GOD, JESUS. bollucks to that idea. its all crap!!

  • Well done. It is great how you show what happens to rabbits after Easter. May be people will think before they buy a rabbit as a present.

Please watch my shorts and give a comment.

  • Thanks for the info. I'd never really thought about the origins of the easter/bunny fetish but the whole fertility/spring equinox connection does actually make a lot of sense!
I think I'll stick to the chocolate this year. :)
  • Very cool video.. SAVE THE BUNNIES! :)

  • Among the English language and the practice of slavery, the USA inherited from the British Empire an uncanny love for animals of all kinds and pets in particular. As advance capitalism proceeded to secularize societal practices and commodify all human relationships this love for pets was superseded by market practices and, very often, by the traffic of pets for pure profit. In this short documentary Ms Soller calls our attention to the commercialization of Easter bunnies and the heartless disposal of these animals, once the holidays are over. A series of interviews illuminate obscure corners and details of this practice here in this animal-loving country. Thank you, Julie, for this timely reflection on the subject!

  • I love how we can count on you for holiday pods. Quite fun. This particular pod though I was a bit confused as to what the story was. I felt like there should be continuous reminders that we are looking into the life cycle of a bunny because of Easter. I didn't really see the connection besides "don't buy one." But you've had amazing feedback from the rest of the crew so good luck with getting it to TV!

  • I'd love this one on the air. It's great.

  • I'm glad that you went into the religious symbolism of what the bunny means, Julie. I definitely learned something from this.
I have to agree with Ashley Maria though, in understanding what your story was. Are you saying that we shouldn't buy real life bunnies because it's Easter? It's no different than people buying dalmatians when the "101 Dalmatians"movie came out like 12 years ago. It turns into this seasonal/trendy thing that needs to be avoided because animals have feelings too.
Your b-roll was excellent. I like how you shot Royce Hall with the sunset. I think you could have slowed down the pan down of the peeps and Easter candy. This is good advice for myself as well.
Excellent job, Julie! Pat on the back!

  • i liked your video! it's really barbaric the idea of buying a bunny without taking care of it afterward.
it's much more compassionate eating a baked rabbit with black olives!

  • Shows how people get caught up in holiday rhetoric but don't even really know why. Good video as usual. I think I'll go take a bite of my chocolate bunny now. ;-)

  • lot's of good info on how to take care of bunnies, and on their whereabouts as pets (stats). but i got lost as to how that all connects with why they're the easter mascot. should it lead with an intro that makes it seem like it's all about the animal's connection to the religious holiday...? anyway, nice camera movement and b-roll.

  • Great job Julie! Thanks for giving us a look at the origin of the now ubiquitous Easter Bunny. I have always wondered how isles full of puffed pink bunnies of all shapes and substances ended up cramming the isles of the grocery store for a few weeks every year. I love the music and the pod is well shot. Great characters, great message (Bob Barker would be proud!) and great story!
