'19 Tibet protesters shot dead in China'

The death toll from the violent protests in China is now reported to stand at 99, and the Dalai Lama has said he'll quit if violent demonstrations get out of control.

Tibet's government-in-exile reports that 19 Tibetan protesters have been shot dead in the Gansu province, in contrast to the Chinese authorities' claims that only 13 "innocent civilians" have died, as the result of protesters' violence.

The Dalai Lama has hit back at Chinese leaders and radical Tibetans by threatening to "resign" if the recent violence escalated. The spiritual leader has insisted that independence is "out of the question" and has urged his people to live "side by side" with the Chinese. Some reports suggest there appears to be a divide amongst the older followers of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan youth.

"There is increasing frustration in the Tibetan community in the younger generation. His Holiness' stand has been in existence for the past 20 years but nothing has come out of this," said the President of Tibetan Uprising Movement, Psewang Rigzin

He also responded angrily to the Chinese government's claims that he masterminded the riots by challenging them to investigate his office and even his own pulse, urine and stools.

  • Check out more on this story on this thread. It sounds like the Dalai Lama is trying to be as transparent as possible in refuting China's claims that he is a liar and the mastermind behind the uprising.

  • We will never get the truth from China. I tried to go to Tibet when i was in Nepal had a visa and everything the Chinese government wouldn't let us in because we were American. They only let you in if you go where they tell you to go on their "tour" groups. They don't let the Tibetans learn english either so they can't tell anyone the truth of what's going on there.

  • This entire situation is so sad. If only the Chinese would realize the benefit of having a peaceful Buddhist community within their borders. For a country desperately in need of some good press, embrace Tibet would achieve that goal.

I am continually impressed by the Dalai Lama's commitment to peace. His tactic may take more time, but at least it minimizes death.
