Gaza tensions spill onto Facebook

There has been an unusual catalyst furthering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: social networking site, Facebook.

According to reports, Jews residing in the West Bank were incensed to discover they had to choose Palestine, not Israel, when filling out their location network.

After an Israeli campaign, Facebook offered its users the option of listing Israel or Palestine as their country.

Should Facebook have preempted such conflicting issues?

  • I don't know. I think that people should be allowed to chose their networks, not be tied to geographic locations. I have friends who live abroad but don't subscribe to their host city network. They keep their original hometown network. It seems strange that Facebook wouldn't force people in the UK or the US to chose their local network, but would force people to do so in an area embroiled with conflict. Seems unfair.

  • this is interested subject ,many many networks they put only one option for palestinians to select their location ( ISRAEL) . it really bothers me .

  • its a stupid issue actually. maybe those whiney isrealis whom probably live in a stolen settlement are the ones that are complaining. umm we stole this land from palestine in 1998...and built a settlement..its not palestine anymore...so face book needs to update. maybe if isreali's would stop stealing land so fast facebook could keep up!

like jo-pal said...what about the pals that want to represent palestine...but cant because of the opposite?! they have to put garbageland..er i mean isreal.
