McCain has recently been conflating Iran with Al Qaeda--which is pretty implausible. That throws McCain's credentials on security into question.

  • This should be as publicly mocked as the Obama/Wright debacle.

  • Alex, you should be ashamed of yourself. If you know anything about Al Qaeda, you would know that they are not beyond alliance with ANYONE who advances their mission. To rule out cooperation on the basis of sectarianism alone is a bad mistake. Please go look at the 9/11 Commission Report where evidence of Iran/AQ cooperation is presented. For instance, we know that:

    1) High level Al Qaeda and Taliban operatives were sheltered in Tehran after our invasion of Afghanistan

    2) Zarqawi did use Iran as a base of operations and as a training ground

    3) Ties between Ansar al-Islam and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard are well documented by the Kurds and by our Intelligence Agencies

    4) After the Kenyan Embassy Bombings in 1998, the Clinton Administration made the following charge in its indictment of AQ:

"USAMA BIN LADEN, the defendant, and al Qaeda also forged alliances with the National Islamic Front in the Sudan and with representatives of the government of Iran, and its associated terrorist group Hizballah, for the purpose of working together against their perceived common enemies in the West, particularly the United States."

You can find all these facts in mainstream news articles (Washington Post, Newsweek among others) or in the 9/11 Commission Report. This is not "right wing" or "neo con" raving.

McCain's mistake wasn't in saying that Iran and AQ are connected. His mistake was not sticking to his guns when Joe Lieberman tried to correct him.

  • The 9/11 Commission Report...mmmm, now there's a document I want to put my faith in....
    Incredulous
  • The Commission Report is but one of many sources for this information. It would be helpful to the discussion if you would tell us exactly what part(s) of the report you disagree with.

  • I rather doubt that my expanding on what parts of the 9/11 Commission Report I disagree with will be helpful to this discussion....but their complete failure to address some of the most searing questions of the families of the dead might be a good place to start.

Personally, I don't doubt that Iran has a vested interest in Al Qaeda, nor that Al Qaeda, as you say, is not beyond alliance with ANYONE who advances their mission. But is this any different for the CIA?

This is all a much larger game than the tiny movements of pawns we have been seduced into believing occupy the entire board.
