Oh my god!! Religious ceremonies take on some of the strangest practices. Is reliving the crucifixion really going to bring you closer to god?

It brings them closer to god i suppose, and really thats all that matters, its not our place to judge their beliefs anyhow. I would never do it, but hey we all have our own quirks.

Ouch. I'll stick with egg hunting.

This is the kind of radical and unnecessary behavior that fosters hatred or ridicule towards Christians. I certainly don't plan to reinvent the crucifixion because it doesn't bring you any closer to God (unless, of course, you die because of it and find yourself standing at his feet). When Jesus asked for us to suffer, he did not mean literally or physically. He already took care of that for us. The Bible teaches that he died so that we would not have to. His body was broken to pay for our sins. The crucifixion is meant to be symbolic and not taken as a literal practice. I've never hurt myself for God, but I feel close to Him everyday through prayer and communion, reading His Word, and just meditating on the blessings He has given me.

Actually it is the putting down of people and calling their rituals unnecessary and calling them radicals, that makes Christianity look bad.

Alright, so I have been put in my place. So sorry. To each his own. If it brings them closer to God, honestly, then okay. Have at it.
