Hallmark meat company recalled 143 Million pounds of beef and it is said it to be the largest meat recall in US History. Albee Yap meets with former Hallmark employee, Humane Society supervisor, environmental director and Hallmark/Westland researcher to explain their concern of the company's treatment towards their cows. The Inland Valley Humane Society shows investigative footage and describes the circumstance of down cows and the diseases that it can bring about. Denise Clendening sheds awareness of the outcomes to previous and recent meat recalls.

Such an upsetting piece to watch, but I think it's a good way to show people just how badly these animal are being treated and to motivate individuals to do something. What type of penalties are there for companies who so grossly violate these laws?

Unfortunately, the profit motive governs food production just like every other business in the US. The price you pay for "free markets" is businesses who feel they are under duress to make more money, and will do anything -anything: even commit cruel acts like the ones in this pod- to increase their profits and cut losses. People think that competition and capitalism increases quality. That's the biggest cliche I hear, but the truth is that capitalism increases deception as businesses grow more and more desperate to keep their investors and shareholders happy. Brecht said it best:
"Those who are against Fascism without being against capitalism, who lament over the barbarism that comes out of barbarism, are like people who wish to eat their veal without slaughtering the calf. They are willing to eat the calf, but they dislike the sight of blood. They are easily satisfied if the butcher washes his hands before weighing the meat. They are not against the property relations which engender barbarism; they are only against barbarism itself. They raise their voices against barbarism, and they do so in countries where precisely the same property relations prevail, but where the butchers wash their hands before weighing the meat."

This actually just made me motivated to be mindful of what I eat. This is like supersize me but more in depth.

This stuff makes me so sad and angry. And yet, this stuff happens at nearly every slaughterhouse in America. It's really disgusting, but to these companies, profit is more important than people. Read Slaughterhouse by Gail A. Eisnitz. It really describes just how corrupt and disgusting these places are, not only to the animals but to the workers as well. And probably the worst thing is that the USDA has workers in EVERY ONE of these buildings that witness this many times, but the USDA does nothing about it. It's sickening just to think about it. Really think about what's on your plate before you dig in, it might have been treated like this.

It's harsh and should be aired.

I like that you put this out there AlbeeYap (its enough to take me off red meat) but seriously, the audio doesn't match the tone or setting of this video and is overpowering. To retain interest, you should probably put visuals about what your subjects are talking about while they're talking. Otherwise, awesome.

This is quite disturbing. You did a good job in getting everyone together like that. This definitely should be aired.
I LIKE IT -
The music goes well with the setting.
Good job Albee -
Anyone knows how the trail is going? This needs to be aired because I wasn't aware of this.

A++ for this video. The message that you relay in this documentary is on point. All the images and interviews has made me think twice on what to consume. Kudos to you, great video!! Definitely needs to be aired. . .

Great footage.. greed is everywhere... starts form the top of the pile! shit rolls downhill... lands on poor ole joe yet again, keep up the good work all.
-
It disgusts me to watch those idiots treating the animals that way. I ONLY eat organically raised beef - and not too often at that.

Barbaric treatment of these poor creatures.

Why are people so prone to saying stuff like "Oh, I only eat x amount of meat" after seeing stuff like this? I mean, it's really something to think about, and possibly act about, but I don't think confessions are going to help. But congrats on whatever non meat-eating feats you guys have accomplished.

Albee, you did a great job with this piece. As others have said, bravo on compiling a convincing set of witnesses. One critique: I found the music somewhat overwhelming at times, mostly the sheer volume, but the piano music in particular really drowned out the speech. All things considered however, very well done.

Sounds to me corruption in the USDA is about as deep as water in the Marianas Trench.
