i wonder how the director pitched the idea to studio execs..

"so I want to make this movie. It's a remake...same plot....came out about 10 years ago....except in german....and I, uh, directed that one too."

the movie does look really creepily good though. respect.

10 years have passed since the original German release and the screenplay is still very relevant. But, as stevetheno points out, it's exactly the same film - only in a different language and with a different (better?) cast.

I think Haneke is one of the best contemporary European directors but I really don't understand why he has made a remake of his own film for the sake of the American market.

I think Haneke wanted me to hate this film, and he totally succeeded. Although I admire his skills as a director, I found this film a bit nihilistic, even for my sensibilities.

Stay home and rent Cache instead.

Spot on! I saw this movie and loved it after it haunted me for a whole weekend. Golf shorts aren't awful, you probably just look lousy in them

This was a really creepy movie. Michael Pitt is a fantastic actor. Well done performances, movie was a good commentary on violence.

I admire the director for doing this shot for shot and bringing it to American audiences. Its a shame it is not finding the crowds it should.

I thought Timothy Roth was underused in this role.

I didn't get why this movie was made at all. Was very dissapointed. Was expecting Clockwork Orange

The shots in this movie were genius. Made me feel as if I was with the family being kidnapped. And Naomi Watts in bra and underwear never hurt anybody.

interesting how this commentary overlaps with another post which gives a link to an article on Hollywood's best-loved offensive stereotypes--the gay/effeminate psychopath!

and was it the intention of current tv to make their viewers want to GO SEE THIS MOVIE? because, whereas earlier i was genuinely apathetic, now i think i'd really like to see it.

A remake word for word? Really? Couldn't improve on it at all? That's pretty cocky. Trailer looks amazing btw.

I liked it. It had way more layers than everyone gave it credit for. But I hated watching it at parts.

yes, sweeter and more attractive cast than in the first version...
I also was wondering - why did he need to re-shoot the same film again? it could be too banal or genius solution
