If you want to live a more eco-friendly life, try asking your grandparents. The wartime conservation efforts of WWII could offer solutions for greener living.

  • Wow after reading that article, if you didn't notice already, things are quite different since WWII, but somehow our country is still stuck with this incredibly old ways of thinking! Wonder how and when America will progress more towards a 'current' way of living, thinking, and accepting!

  • Totally with you "Woodywoodbeck." I sure do not want to make the mistake in generalizing our situation here in regards to some Senior Citizens valuable knowledge to combat Global Warming. However the same is not happening in the City of San Francisco Today. On the contrary, here in San Francisco, the majority of the Elderly Seniors "screwed up" our Public Transportation so much that I promised myself not to ride the bus ever again until they fix it and bring our previous environmental friendly bus back.

Huh? How did the elderly screw up Muni? And how were our previous buses more environmentally friendly than our current electric and bio-fuel buses?

    -Honestly confused in San Francisco

  • Part of this article, though, I think, can be read as incentive to look more to the past, though.

Yes, we need progress, but I think we've gotten so caught up in progress, doing more faster, better, cheaper, etc. and not holding onto any ideals of the past that we've thrown the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak.

Think about your grandparents, and some of the habits they had--I think they did a lot of things that were "green" without even thinking about it; far more than people stuck in a competition to see who can be more environmentally friendly than the next guy, while at they same time neglecting some of the most basic habits of conservation.

  • Humm "Allsunday," Thanks for asking! The buses in San Francisco emits many open noise signals that trespass inhabitants property lines all over the City interrupting and disturbing their daily lives.
They shoot all kinds of invasive signals as offensive as high pitched whistles, voice signals, beep signals, brakes and motor high screeched noise, Electric Magnetic Field Noise (EMF). That has all been approved mainly by a lobbied group of Senior Citizens.

"Allsunday," You would know that if you live near these bus lines and if you have a normal earing capacity.

I practically live on top of the T line and all four #9 bus lines, and though I can hear them as they go by or stop when my window is open, I've never had any problems with excess noise. Are you referring to things like the noise that emits from the trolleys when the doors are closing and someone is in the way? Or the audible announcements of the line number and stops? If so, I can certainly see why a group of elderly people would lobby for such a thing, as their senses are less acute than younger people and they may need the additional signals.

That said, I understand how noise pollution can be a problem, but I can't see how it contributes to global warming.

    "Allsunday,"
In this case their erroneous contribution can be translated as being an "ethical one" or "Lack of." Now if you observe the motorcycles with modified mufflers and vehicles with modified mufflers running inside City limits, you would have a different idea in regards to it because they expel not only harmful noise emissions but also more carbon monoxide and its byproducts into the air. It would be great if we all could see the air and the pollution that these vehicles expels daily. I think we would be more active in regards to that and do everything in our power to stop it!

  • Not wanting to extend this conversation beyond it limits, here is other reality of Noise and Global Warming that many people do not think about it.

Noise can not be contained! That is a fact not a fiction! Noise invades walls and everything in its perimeter path.

The only way to defend yourself against it, it is to emit an inverse noise frequency that it is higher than the one you are receiving. You can study that in your class of Physics.

To this point you are waisting more energy by sucking more electricity and thus contributing to Global Warming. In addition creating more pollution.

-Did I answered to you question now?

  • Noise can be an issue, but that's a reality of urban life. If someone really desires peace and quiet, then they can move to the country instead of choosing to live in a city.

  • Oh no! Another "stereotyped" misinformed person! "sgwhites" Go right now to your dictionary and find out what means to stereotype issues to fit to your own erroneous thinking. I could lose some of my time to argue with you but the Congress of the United States have a better debated answer for you through the Federal Law. Here it is:

Sec. 4901. - Congressional findings and statement of policy

    (a) The Congress finds -

    (1) that inadequately controlled noise presents a growing danger to the health and welfare of the Nation's population, particularly in urban areas;
    (2) that the major sources of noise include transportation vehicles and equipment, machinery, appliances, and other products in commerce; and

    (3) that, while primary responsibility for control of noise rests with State and local governments, Federal action is essential to deal with major noise sources in commerce control of which require national uniformity of treatment.

    (b) The Congress declares that it is the policy of the United States to promote an environment for all Americans free from noise that jeopardizes their health or welfare.
