redneck chiks have been doing that for years in texas...well...they aren't foolish enough to throw down $200 for jeans but the whiskey & rollups fit the bill.
-
isn't everyone image-conscious? it's just a trend. it'll blow over in a few months. like skinny jeans. that'll be over when folks get tired of buying band-aids for their swollen ankles.

Who can resist a woman with a taste for whiskey?

Also, is it the New York Observer or the New Yorker who wrote this? The description and the voiceover are in conflict here...

I'm sick of people pretending not to care about being trendy but really are trendy in disguise. If everyone would just stop trying to be cool the world would be a much better place.

article in question should've been linked; be that as it may;
if what you say is true;
your argument is over a reporter..;
should i really care what two bit writer wrote and another writer lend Salon to use as venue for its crique?;i think not;
however, just in case you lack reporter's skill; in enunciation; in enumeration between tom boy of 21st century in NYC; i'd respond by saying ..
where were those tom boys when i was in NYC;)
-
real tomboys aren't trendy. they just are.
-
where is the link to this article? if anyone knows can you post it id like to read it?
-
In all honesty, I'm not too sure of the desired feedback - is it on the framing of the issue or the actual issue itself?
-
I've seen plenty of trendy tom boys in LA, so what it's all to the G-o-o-d...but she's right, to what extent is it to say they are not as image conscious as "girly" dress wearing, high heeled women?

Almost nobody has the actual balls to just be themselves without projecting some kind of bogus pose based on some kind of cultural expectation or some kind of safe flouting of that expectation which is itself a new kind of sub-cultural expectation. Why so ball-less? By the time the average person reaches adulthood they have been systematically, metaphorically and otherwise, beaten into submission by the collective hands of their peers, parents, teachers and neighbors. Usually it is a loving beating, administered tenderly and only for the benefit of the recipient. The average person responds well to the squeezing hands of the societal potter and turns into the nicest vase you would ever see on your mantle. Well, some of us end up as mugs, but you can always use a good mug. Better a vase or a mug, for what is anyone going to do with an asymmetrical blob of clay, with a bunch of strange loops and projections and holes? Just stare at it and say "gee thats ugly"? Wait around for the person with just the right aesthetics who will appreciate it for all its asymmetric joiedevivre? No, it will be smashed far before that, either by mistake or by intention. How do I know all about this? I am a recovering asymmetric blob. I was smashed somewhere sometime in the early 2000s and I managed to use the resultant pieces to fashion a serving platter. I grouped all of the shards of a specific color and that allowed me to make a kind of mosaic pattern. I used JB weld to hold all of the pieces together, which is very effective. I get lots of compliments on my platter, and the thing is, when I look at it, even though no one else can see it, I can see the pieces of my former blob and this makes me happy. Also, it is the only serving platter in a collection of many plates, mugs and bowls and I get some real satisfaction from that.

i totally agree with contemplator
trends are like the latest drugs
they're here, they stick for some time, they're molded to fit individual taste and as soon as it began it's gone or they get forgotten and recycled so many years later-

This story is a microcosm of some of the problems that American culture faces. Part of the problem with extreme feminism is that women are not allowed to simply be women. As this atricle shows, women want to be regarded as attractive, and trendy whether they are dressing as tomboys or blowdrying their hair... and men and women alike should be ok with that, its in their genetic makeup. This dressing as tomboys is no rebellion just another way to be feminine in their own way. The sooner this culture just allows guys to be guys and women to be women the better off we will be. No we are not the same, no we are not equal at anything, everyone is different and everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, and yes gender DOES play a large factor in that. There is nothing wrong with equal opprotunity, but nothing about men and women are equal.
