President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a modest cut Friday in France's nuclear arsenal, to less than 300 warheads, and urged China and the United States to commit to no more weapons tests.
In his first major speech as president on France's much-vaunted nuclear "strike force," Sarkozy said atomic weapons remain a vital component of French defenses.
"It is the nation's life insurance policy," he said. He noted that while France does not face a foreseeable threat of invasion, other dangers exist. He singled out Iran's development of its missile forces and the "grave suspicions" surrounding its nuclear program -- which France and other western powers fear is aimed at developing weapons.
"The security of Europe is at stake," Sarkozy said.
Anyone think we should do away with all nuclear weapons? Why is it okay for some countries to have them and not others? Thoughts?!

In an ideal world we would do away with our nuclear weapons. We could fire them all into space and have a global fireworks show of epic proportions, but unfortunately I can't see that happening.
We'd all have to simultaneously get rid of them so that there was never one country left with them.
Maybe one day it could happen?-
