Meet Thomas Beatie. He was born biologically female, had sex reassignment surgery, and is now legally male. When his wife, Nancy, was unable to have children, Thomas, who still has female genitalia, decided he’d carry their baby himself. And thus became the world’s first pregnant man. A process which, unsurprisingly, hasn’t been too easy.
In this world where sci-fi becomes reality I'm not surprised to finally see a man carrying a baby. Granted it's not the traditionally the way I thought it would come about, ala Arnold in Junior, but still a wondrous feat none the less.
Some might say that this isn't anything new seeing how Thomas started out as a woman. But the question on my mind is why would someone who spent so much time and money going through the process of gender reassignment still hold on to the defining difference of the two sexes?

Female-to-male transgendered people are less likely to have surgery on their genitalia because it's much more complicated than male-to-female genitalia surgery. It's a lot easier to surgically replicate a functioning vagina for MTFs than a functioning penis for FTMs. -
In addition to being medically difficult, surgery is also often out of reach financially. The majority of insurance companies don't cover gender reassignment surgery, so patients must pay out of pocket.
-
First off:
<Seahorses are all, like, “Whatever.” >
Best line ever!
My question is, what gender reassignment surgery did he have? I was under the assumption that it involved primarily the genitals, although I know that other surgeries are involved like making the Adam's Apple less prominent. Can someone elaborate on what surgery he had to legally become a male, without touching the genitalia?
I'm just really curious...thank you! -

He had his breasts removed and began taking a regular regimen of testosterone. :) -
What I'm curious about is, is he still taking male hormones while he is pregnant with the baby? And how will that affect him and the baby in the pregnancy process? Pregnant women have hormones that are all out of whack as it is.
It is sad that they are being turned down by physicians and that their families are unsupportive.
This is very interesting and exciting. -
He'd have to stop his testosterone regimen in order to conceive and not miscarry, so I would venture to say that he's not taking his testosterone right now and won't begin again until after the birth.
-
I think it's really sweet that he would do that for his wife!
-
Well if he stopped taking his testosterone supplements and his female parts started working again he must also be the first man to have a period!
Allsunday, so I hear. But the genitalias isn't what I was referring to. More so the ability to have a child. I didn't realize it was so easy as to stop taking testosterone.. -
Hmm. I don't know what to say except, I'm glad it's not me.

I would hope that someday we might be able to fully accept gender reassigned individuals into our society. Despite this headline's tabloidish nature, it seems to be a step in the right direction to tell this individual's story objectively. Hopefully someday we can embrace our anatomic (ie hormonal, physical etc.) differences without necesarilly associating a certain role or place in society. I would hope that Thomas and his wife understand how blessed they are to be able to have children despite the fact that through "normal" or more specifically socially acceptable means it has become impossible. Thanks for sharing this story!

-
I am still confused as to how he legally became a male before the genital surgery. I thought that surgery was key?
Hmm... -
this is a representation of the sick american society....shame on you!
-
shathoot:
HE technically (and legally) is a man. apparently men do carry babies. he is the dad. he's a he, not a she.
hollyg:
you don't need genital surgery, just outward appearance
psypill:

According to Beatie, he said he legally changed his name and sex about 10 years ago in Hawaii. He underwent a double mastectomy (got rid of his breasts) and started testosterone injections, he said, but kept female reproductive organs.

First of all i like that idea.. women complain so much to men about how they should be a women and have babies and see how it feels.. but when something like this happens ( they say bcareful what you wish for) the whole world starts judging her/him.. I think the best people are gays and trans, they are more open minded to new things then any american! (blah) thats the problem with america today , to up tight and boring.. no freedom here! i love europe they are so open minded.. hey live ur life and enjoy what u have some people dont get to have kids like his wife.. thats real love something people cant seem to see!

tsk...*sigh* Per your title, you surely must mean...**IT'S** pregnant! i.e. that's NOT a man, and NOT a woman...at least not anymore. Most people call that a freak, as no common man is born like that... it's (she's) now a trans-man by surgery. Call "it" what "it" is... 0.o
i think the real story is she had surgery but kept some of her plumbing... -
Read some of the comments above. Most trans-genders can't get rid of the plumbing. And no, I believe the title is correct. "It" has a sex.
-
oh =D uh...yeah. i like how you said "trans-genders" =)~ perhaps that's the new "it" "sex" I'm just not familiar with? =D silly me... =D LOL ...I'm sorry!!! I know I'm being bad. ;)

why would a woman want to be a man when they have got it so easy
http://pregnant-man.wedding-review.info/pregnant%20man.... -
ok???? just because you change something on your body or have something cut off it does not change who you are . It just changes how you look. Attaching a trunk and elephant ears to my body and allowing me to make elephant sounds through pills does not make me an elephant -no matter how much I might want to be one. I really wish everyone would stop saying this is a pregnant man. There is no such thing. Men do not have wombs or periods and their bones are formed differently than a womans. If someone were to dig up her bones after death and identify her -she would still be a woman and always will be -END OF STORY.
-
keymein...hehehe =D thank you for that elephant story =D gave me a good laugh...when I needed it.
-
echoz, you would do well to grow a tact gland.
She is not an it, she is a she...who, in my opinion, should have accepted the fact that she was a lesbian, instead of screwing up her body and her biology.
Don't mean to be an asshole, but she's still a woman. Just calling it like I see it.
Pecks and facial hair do not a man make.
Everyone has the cards they are dealt; deal.
Oh, the pun.
Note: I do NOT advocate discrimination against transgendered people; I just don't fucking get it. -
Will someone tell me also...why you would want to attach an organ to yourself that doesn't work and looks like a penis that went through a shredder???? And why would the other lesbian that she is with want a penis in the first place...don't lesbians like "hair-pie" only"? I just don't get it! I know as a woman ...and let me just say that I am not gay so,...but anyway, there are times when I just need to feel the sensation of the penis inside. Maybe lesbians get like that too??!! I guess I could've answered my own question, huh? But, if it doesn't work (like the shim's doesn't)...do they go the kitchen to get the spatula or buy massive different dildos? Hhhhhmmmm again. Let me also admit that there have been times when I have fantasized about having a penis and balls...just so I could screw someone else over and say that I did and had the equipment just to prove it (but I'm not sure I ever really meant it literally) I mean- does the (SHIM: SHE- HIM) pretend that a BJ is satisfying.? This (to me) is awful role play/foreplay. WTF..."I WANNA BE A MAN -NOPE I WANNA BE A WOMAN...NOPE i WANNA BE A MAN..NOPE, NOW I WANNA BE A WOMAN...COM' MON ALREADY! I agree with Humddrum deal with who you are--- already! It would be really cool if after these people stopped taking pills that their bodies started a metamorphosis and everything started growing back the way that it was???
-
"Yes Doc...I would like you to attach 8" no, 12" of non-working limp penis to my vagina, for my girlfriend to play and pretend with..thanks!"
