  • I was initially sceptical about the extent pre-fabs really are environmentally friendly, rather than just cool-looking - when done well - and having a sense of design exclusivity. But the social benefits for people looking to buy a home are undeniable - as underlined by this pod about Hurricane Katrina and lush pre-fabs which cost the same amount to produce as the dreaded FEMA trailers. • I didn't like the styling of the units shown in the video, but I dig Jennifer Siegal's Swellhouse.

Clearly prefab is the future of construction. In combination with solar electric, passive solar and geothermal for heating/cooling you could get close to ZERO utility bills and drastically reduced carbon foot print.

    I'm all for it!

  • It's really important to get designer-types and aesthetically-focused people on board with the sustainability movement because in many cases, they are driving the market. It's really exciting to see sustainable items which look and feel cool too!

  • That's true, nwillens, but it smacks of hypocrisy when here in the UK there are around 850,000 houses which are empty because they've fallen into disrepair. Wouldn't it be better for the environment (and aesthetics) to refurbish one of these homes, rather than start from scratch?

  • I'm excited to see more diversity in the design of these prefab houses. Many of the ones I've seen all feel the same. I hope this business grows and becomes more diverse.

  • Pre-fab will never be "green" by any means. As far as sustainable, maybe so.
