Falling asleep on job improves memory

Falling asleep on the job for a few minutes can improve your memory and mental performance, according to a team of German researchers.

Olaf Lahl at the University of Dusseldorf, Germany, has shown that simply falling asleep does more than refresh the brain - it can improve recall and mental efficiency.

In fact, a six-minute nap can have the same effect as night-time sleep on memory.

Lahl’s team asked students to memorise a list of vocabulary and tested their ability to recall the list after an hour of playing solitaire.

Volunteers were asked to remember a list of 30 words. They were then given an hour’s break before the memory test. During the break, some volunteers were allowed to nap for six minutes, while others had to stay awake.

The researchers found that those who had been allowed to nap displayed ’superior recall’ in the memory test compared to those who stayed awake.

The researchers said this was the first time that a very brief sleep has been shown to improve memory.

‘To our knowledge, this demonstrates for the first time that an ultra-brief sleep episode provides an effective memory enhancement,’ Lahl wrote in the Journal of Sleep Research.

  • Ya well, fall asleep at work and it might help you memory, but it won't likely help your Resume. It should though.

  • I know that sleeping after studying or learning new information will help your brain consolidate the information. So studying late and then going to bed is usually better than waking up early and studying. Unless of course, you are falling asleep while studying, then that won't help.

But yeah, that's exactly what I'll tell my boss the next time I'm hung over and got 4 hours of sleep the night before. I'm sure it'll go over real well.

  • don't tell....

I usually sleep for at least a half hour to 1 hour each day at work...and I get nothing but praise, and rewards.

I even got a title change for a new project that I had an idea to do. And I must honestly admit if it wasn't for the :30 to 1:30 naps I take each day, I would not be this productive.

But lets keep the sleep thing on the hush....

  • i think the real question is after going through all that the people in research had, did they really want to fall asleep.? ?

Because i know when i want to fall asleep, from boredom, or idiot people talking to me for prolonged periods of time, it helps a lot.

However, when i want to be involved with what is going on around me, then sleep is the last thing that i would want.
