Should cigarette counters be banned?

Under new proposals set out by the government, displaying cigarettes in shops could soon become illegal in a bid to discourage children starting smoking as well as hopefully cutting the amount of smokers in the UK.

According to the BBC, Ministers are also considering tighter controls on vending machines in pubs and restaurants, with the public also getting to voice their opinions over the coming months.

Should there be stricter control over the sale of cigarettes, or are the Association of Convenience Stores' thoughts that the the move would be "ineffective" true?

  • Again lazy parenting leads to mis-guided youth, which the goverment has pick up the slack for,

  • lesson- reduce " parents" - all the evils of this world start with them .

  • Again with treating cigarettes like they're the pure source of all evil. Should we then ban the display of alcohol in stores or take down signs for liquor stores? Should all of the commercials for beer and liquor be banned? Perhaps, because we don't want our children to one day become criminals, we should make all of the nation's prisons invisible too. Why stop there? Let's make funny faces illegal. Our kids are so stupid and can't make choices for themselves that they'll mimic a funny face they see on the street and it'll get stuck that way!

Now what else can the media and irrational citizens focus on so as to ignore important issues?

  • Now I'm actually gunna have to disagree with everyone. Parenting cannot stop smoking. There needs to be input from both the government and the family. If parenting really was as magically powerful as you guys make it sound we would have a lot less problems.
Normally, if it were a different topic, I would agree with you guys that it really shouldn't be a government issue (like censoring children's books or what clothing you wear), but smoking is different. It is completely useless for society. It has absolutely zero benefits for anybody except for the tobacco companies. Why shouldn't the government make efforts to stop the amount of smokers? A law like this would not harm anyone, it could only do good. I'm glad the government is thinking about ways to lower the amount of people with this absolutely stupid addiction that has somehow managed to survive for this long. Why would you poison yourself? Its human stupidity at its finest.

  • That's the main point RonenA, a lot of that human stupidity can be remedied by a strong parental influence. If the education was coming from the parents like it's supposed to the government wouldn't need to intervene and set these parameters.

And there would be less problems if parenting were magically powerful. Duh.

  • Exactly, parenting is good but i can't solve everything. It needs to be supplemented by other influences - most importantly, I would say, is the person's own beliefs. Sure its great to have parental influence and obviously more of that would be more effective at solving the problem than banning counters but a law like this shouldn't anger you. It should please you that the government is doing something to address this issue.

  • But when the person's beliefs can be potentially clouded by government regulations, that's where the problems arise.

And for the record, I'm not angered by this law. I'm a non-smoker living in the States, so it doesn't really affect me. I don't really know why anyone would be angered by it. It's just a reflection of the sad state of affairs in this world as whole, you know?

  • Yep. I just felt like there was a negative response to the law. Maybe i kinda misunderstood. Anyways, off to bed.

  • Why is the solution to some of these social issues always to ban it as if its gonna stop people from trying to get it.
Ban prostitution! The loudest critics are usually the johns.
Ban alcohol! Even though kids can get drunk of Benadryl.
Ban guns! Even though the people behind the trigger are the problem, now they want to ban cigarettes?

I'm not a smoker, but I know some people who would becoming instant dealers if they were illegal. A conversation about it from caring parents does go a long way. My mother learned from my older brother who started smoking at 14. She never spoke to him about it. My little brother, she started talking about the dangers of smoking to since 9 years old. It works.
