Senior US General "Iran was behind the Green Zone attacks"

Gen David Petraeus told the BBC he thought Tehran had trained, equipped and funded insurgents who fired the barrage of mortars and rockets.

"The rockets that were launched at the Green Zone yesterday, for example... were Iranian-provided, Iranian-made rockets. All of this in complete violation of promises made by President Ahmadinejad and the other most senior Iranian leaders to their Iraqi counterparts."

This news comes just five days after George Bush marked the fifth anniversary of the invasion by saying that it had made the world a better place. Has it made the world a better place? And is this latest statement by Petraeus just more war propaganda to create a case to invade Iran?

  • Isn't this special . . .

  • If the Presidential elections weren't only seven months away I'd say I would almost expect an US led invasion into Iran with in a year... I'll still say the same thing if McCain or Clinton is elected.

  • Wouldn't that be a great way to scare people into electing a republican to "protect" us?

  • Will Petraeus betray-us again? He's working for the administration you know.

If they can just somehow manage to get a war started with Iran before the Fucking Crazies are escorted out of the White House it would be a major coup for evil in our lifetimes.

  • please George, don't do it. just resist the temptation, please, please, please. only a few more months. no more invasions, please, I'm begging you!
  • The United States funded jihad against Soviet communists in afghanistan in the 1980s.

Maybe someone should have invaded our country in the name of "peace and democracy?"

  • The administrations' general. He really is their man isn't he? They're just not going to give it up either. A better place? Absolutely not. It's to the point anymore where it just about makes me physically ill to hear another lie from dubya. The amount of arrogance is hard to stomach.

  • To paraphrase an Internet Meme:

    1. America goes to war with Iran.
    2. Bush and Cheney cancel elections.
    3. American people realise they have a dictatorship.
    4. Rebellion ensues.
    5. ????
    6. Country recovers
    7. Profit!!

  • Cheney's recent trip to the Mideast encircled Iran as you can see here on the map. He went around telling everyone Iran was making weapons grade Uranium, despite it being a complete lie.

  • Thanks Petraeus blame it on Iran you haven't finished cleaning the mess you got right now and still you want to start another. When will people learn!

  • when you boil it all down, our administration's thirst for oil seems to be the maker of all the trouble.

let's just get off the oil, it'll be better for everyone.

  • Everytime I see things in the media along these lines, I think, here we go again with the scare tactics. Will this administration never end? Bush has been wanting to start a war with Iran for a long time now. Why hasn't he been impeached?

  • I wonder if the Iranian weapons the good general is talking about were meant to be used by a militant Shiite group against other militant Shiite groups.
These folks have been fighting each other for years and the situation is so bad that not even Muqtada al-Sadr can stop them from doing so.
But then the US forces intervene, or attack, and the militant Shiites end up using these Iranian weapons on the US troops. That doesn't mean they were meant to be used agains them.
I think the US should be helping Muqtada try to gain control of the situation and help him reconcile the different Shiite groups.
Perhaps that way the US troops might not get attacked with Iranian weapons every time they try to solve the problem militarily.
  • To whoever thinks the general betrayed us: Give me one example of Petraeus betraying the U.S. and it's citizens....

Do you really think you could handle Iraq better than him. We shouldn't have gone there in the first place, but guess what? We are there and have to finish the job.

Iran talks about whiping Israel off the face of the map and then announces plans for nuclear power for "civilian use"

It's not hard to believe the Iranians are arming some of the nutjobs in Iraq,
