The Surfrider Foundation is constantly challenging the Transportation Corridor Agency’s (TCA) plans to build a Toll Road through San Onofre State Park but makes questionable claims about impacts to the waves and environment that the road may cause.

  • Here's the Surfrider Foundations website if you want more information or for ways that you can help...

  • Well done Matt. Good job presenting both sides of the issue. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

  • Nice pod. It was short and straight to the point. I agree, I think you did a really good job capturing both sides of this issue. Though it's not neccessary, I would have personally wanted to hear more from everyday people and surfers who go to this beach. Congrats to making it on air!

  • Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you guys enjoyed the video. Just to through out my personal opinion which has changed since making the video and talking to different people. I am convinced that the Surfrider foundation is magnifying this projects effects to much more than will probably happen. I would really encourage people to read closely about the T.C.A.'s info and plans for project and compare it to the Surfriders argument. I keep meeting people who act like advocates for preventing the Toll Road but don't understand the project from both sides. I am not saying there will not be negative effects from the road but there is an issue of miscommunication and manipulation of information on the Surfriders side.

  • As someone who surfed Trestles when I lived in Southern California, I would hate to see the break there altered in any way. What concerns me most is the impact the road will have on the park grounds, if the artist's rendition is anything close to accurate. Why are we building a toll road through a state park? Wasn't that land designated a park to protect it? The land between LA and San Diego has slowly become developed to the point where there is precious little left to remind us what this area used to look like. How about, instead of building more roads to encourage more cars burning more fossil fuels encouraging more hostile acts on the part of our government in order to secure more rights to those fuels, we encourage people to get out of their damn gas-guzzling cars and use the train?

  • This is horrible, building a Toll Road through a State Park? You can't do that, you'll kill the environment with the building and cars emitting emissions. Absurd

  • Great pod; informative, quick, and represents all sides.

But, ugh, I can't believe they want to do that. America needs to push less for killing the environment and supporting polluting cars, but more towards things like electric trains, from something like solar power. And I'm SURE they have plenty of sun in Cali. Too much traffic there? Clear it up with alternatives.

Its time for America to catch up with the rest of world and take responsibility for our actions on the earth, is it not?
  • Great work. So happy to see Current air this.

  • The answer isn't expanding our highway system. Just listen to the video. Our highways were built in the 50s and 60s and aren't made to move as many people as there are. The video also says the population will grow 60% by 2025 I believe. So how is making a 16 mile toll road going to do anything?

It's time for a high speed rail to be built in the state. It will cut harmful pollution as well as get many cars off the road. And at cruising speeds over 300mph it will bet you from LA to the Bay Area in 2hrs 17minutes. Sure it's going to cost billions of dollars but in the long run it beats the constant upkeep of our roads due to their high usage. And it will have a much smaller environmental impact.
