Savvy consumers, empowered by the Internet and encouraged by a slowing economy, are finding that they can dicker on prices, not just on clearance items or big-ticket products like televisions but also on lower-cost goods like cameras, audio speakers, couches, rugs and even clothing.

  • This is just incredible. Big named businesses are now having to negotiate with customers to get them to buy things. This truly is a sign of the times. Wonder how bad sales are for these companies. I'm sure that's why they are taking this approach...anyone agree!?

  • Well it does not necessarily have to be the scare of recession that is causing companies to lower prices. What about increased competition? There are always many economic factors that are in play when it comes to the pricing of goods.

  • I read this in the Times the other day - I wonder if salespeople at Apple stores are allowed to haggle? :)

I'll definitely be doing more research online the next time I buy anything at an electronics store.

  • So true (re the economics factors)

Not only are there many more companies to compete with, but firms are competing on a bigger and bigger geographic scale. They don't just compete with the guy next door to them, they also have to compete with companies in other cities, states and countries.

In addition, there are often substitutes and alternatives to many of the products we are thinking about purchasing. (Just another form of competition!)

And if you think about the fact that consumers are becoming more savvy in the sense that it is easier for them to shop around. If I want to buy a new TV, all I have to do is turn on my computer and compare prices on the websites of various retailers to see which firm is having a sale or has the low price, all before I drive my car to the store.

It is also easier for consumers to find out about new trends, and compare features of similar products. (Information is just coming at us at a higher speed than ever before)

We can also buy goods through online retailers and auction sites, such as ebay, amazon, half.com, overstock.com...the average consumer just has many more options about where to shop than they did even just 10 or 15 years ago.
