Families of those killed in the Virginia Tech massacre would receive $100,000 each under a settlement the state is proposing to prevent lawsuits, according to a victim's relative who received a copy of the proposal.

Medical and counseling expenses would be provided to the families of the 32 killed and dozens of surviving victims, said the person, who asked Monday to remain anonymous because those involved were told not to discuss the settlement.

Families would also have the opportunity to question the governor and university officials about the shootings, according to the family member.

    • Lets look at the facts. 1. There was a shooting on the campus. 2. They kept the campus open. 3. Security prematurely reached conclusions instead of taking proer action. 4. Faculty repeatedly raised serious concerns about this specific student numerous times. 5. The School refused to do anything in response to the concerns raised about this student. 6. The same reckless response was taken a year earlier on the Va Tech campus when armed escaped fugitives were hiding out on the campus. 7. Va Tech kept the same head of security after the poor and unsafe response to armed fugitives. 8. Va Tech is a gun-free school, the people on the campus require more than a "text message" in response to shootings on campus. 9. An adequate response by campus security would have saved about 30 lives. 10. Virginia Tech has never acknowledged making a single mistake or wrongdoing in there poor non-response to the shooting.

People need to pay for their reckless mistakes which cost the lives of people. What the victims family do with the money is their own business. The people responsible for the poor security response and refuing to do anything about this student after numerous concerns were made should have to pay for their wrongdoings and above all be removed from a position where they can continue to make the same dangerous mistakes ever again.

    • I think it's kind of sad that you could put a price on a loved one's life. $100,000 isn't going to bring back a son or daughter. I think that the families of the victims should donate the money to charity.

    • If I'm remembering it correctly, it was a psychotic student with a Travis Bickle complex who put the lives of the students and faculty in great danger. What was Virginia Tech supposed to have done, again?

(When did we become a society that believes that every tragedy deserves a payout?)

    • I think that the Virginia Tech should have to pay a much larger penalty. They are getting off way too easy. I hope the families decide to take the school to court. This is not the first time Virginia Tech put the lives of the students and faculty in great danger on their campus.

    • And, as we type, a parent holds his or her hands out, palms up, and imagines $100,000 in one and their child's death in the other.

    • I'm glad something is being done about this, it would only be a shame for the parents to take the school to court because regardless of their reasons, society would look at the whole situation as money-grab scam. Nobody wants to see their deaths turned into a money making scheme. Maybe that is why I always found it strange to give somebody money when a loved one dies. (not saying i disagree with it...it's just a little crazy)

    • Who are these blabber mouths that want to remain anonymous? And the news agencies that report it? Maybe they should keep their mouths shut.
