Beckham's a centurion but Capello suffers first defeat

England football manager Fabio Capello has suffered his first defeat after a somewhat lacklustre performance from his team who lost 1-0 to the French.

Beckham started the match to receive his centurion cap, and although England had the better first half, a much changed second-half team failed to deliver.

But after watching the pre-match press conference with all their attention focussed on David Beckham, I wonder if Capello giving Beckham his 100th cap had a detrimental effect on the rest of the team?

  • Basically, it is to get it over and done with... and being that it is a friendly, who really cares...England did not qualify for Euro 2008 so chances are Beckham will not play in any real meaninful game for England ever again.

I hope he can do well in the MLS in the twilight of his career, it would be great to have soccer in America become more mainstream...perhaps MLS execs need to start thinking about overpaying players in their prime to gain an audience...

  • I think it's still something to worth being noted, though I think Beckham is quite overrated as a football player

  • Whoever tagged this as 'soccer' should be ashamed of themselves.

  • really Simon? Strange, but I am not. It is how
we Americans refer to the sport. Especially
when making a point about Major League...Soccer.

  • I think its a real shame for England that David decided to join the MLS. Whatever you think about him he is one of England's most experienced and consistent players. How much longer can he cut it at the highest level when week in, week out he plays in a sub standard league? It is only going to hasten his decline and lower his fitness levels.
    Pardon
  • I live in Maryland and I call both football and football football.
If the makes me wierd, so be it.
Australia does it. Why cant we?
