Bill Clinton Defends Defense of Marraige Act

"Student journalists put Bill Clinton on the defensive over DOMA". Clinton claimed that during the political climate of 1996, it was more prudent to turn the issue over to the states rather than allow a constitutional amendment. The students were dissatisfied with Clinton's response and pressed him to denounce DOMA as his wife had done. Clinton then went on to say, he wasn't anti gay because he had gay people in his administration and that DOMA was a strategy. Clinton also believes Melissa Etheridge's statement on the LOGO network that she felt the Clinton administration "threw gays under the bus" was a revision of history. Despite pressure from the students, Clinton never recognized the hardships gays face under DOMA. He did recognize the hardships Utah might have with recognize Marriage Equality.

Did Slick Willy earn his nickname yet again?

No, Bill Clinton is a very smart man who is seeking compromise. He made a good point that the Republicans were able to bring out their "base" to vote in the general election BECAUSE there were so many "marriage protection" ballot propositions on state ballots. Look at California. The extreme religious groups are trying to gather enough signatures to put an anti-gay-marriage measure on the ballot here which would amend the California state constitution to only allow marriage between a man and a woman. That's not only ridiculously not ever going to pass in California, but it's a ploy to get Republicans out in droves to make sure we have yet another old white man in office making the same mistakes his predecessors did....Okay, so instead of bickering over whether or not the defense of marriage act was right or wrong, let's all pull together to make sure A DEMOCRAT, an openminded person, becomes our next President. We can't afford four more years of war and deficit spending. Don't forget that under the Clintons, our economy was booming and he ERASED the deficit.

Perhaps if DOMA did not exist, but rather a law protecting the rights of all citizens under the law despite their sexuality, then the republicans would not have the option of funding these hate filled bills.
